In year 4 Geography, the children have been learning all about the Rainforest Biome. This week, they were investigating what impact humans have on the rainforest and deciding whether the impact is positive or negative. They conducted some independent online research, finding that humans are the main cause of deforestation, however this happenes because of the demand for the land for products and resources we require a lot of.

After researching, the children debated what they had found. They discussed the positives and negatives of the impact humans have on the forest and came to the conclusion that humans have a negative impact on the forest but they understand this comes from human demand. They decided that they will be more conscious and each made a promise to do something small to help reduce the demand on the rainforest.

Y4 Games: Invasion: Netball

Y4E…(and Miss Stewart) are thoroughly enjoying developing and applying their netball skills in P.E this term. The children have been refining the skill of passing and receiving the ball utilising the ‘chest-pass’ firstly with a partner then in a 5v1 possession game with a defender to create a little pressure.  In practicing and utilising their knowledge of space, the children have further worked upon the skill of moving the ball up the court with a view to creating a shooting opportunity into the net of a real goal. We have recently introduced the position of Goal Shooter (GS) in our mini-games of 5v5 Flier Netball with a view to including the positions of Goal Keeper (GK), Goal Defence (GD) and Goal Attack (GA) as we progress further.

School Council Meeting

This morning, our School Council and House Captains met up with Miss Ewen and Miss Mead to discuss a new strategy which is being put in place over the next couple of weeks. As a council, we spoke about incorporating a whole school suggestions box which will be accessible for all pupils. Children will have the opportunity to submit their own suggestions based on what they would like to see around the school.

Data Collection and Logging – Year 4

In computing this week, year 4 have been collecting and logging data.

We have looked at what data is and identified many types of data that can be collected around school. We discussed that our 5 senses can be used to collect data. We then had a look at a data logger device, which has sensors similar to our senses, and began to collect and log the data. We collected data on noise levels, lighting and temperature.

We enjoyed collecting data from different areas around the school and comparing the data from the graph and the tables of data that we created.

Solids, Liquids and Gasses

Year 4 have been experimenting with solids, liquids and gasses.

We learnt all about the formation of the particles within solids, liquids and gasses and even acted out how they move.

We then looked at many different items such as, wood, plastic, cotton, water, PVA glue, slime, tooth paste, foam, flour, helium and air. We then classified and grouped these based on whether we thought they were a solid, liquid or gas. This was a challenging task as many of the items made us think really hard as they showed the potential to be multiple state of matter. We looked at the flour closely as we were able to pour this similarly to a liquid but discussed that each grain is a solid. We also looked closely at the slime as this filled the shape of each container it was put in but we could also pick it up and rip it. Finally, we carefully considered the foam as this held its shape in the container for a long time but eventually spread to fill the container.

This experiment sparked some really good discussions and got us to think deeply about what we had learnt about the different states of matter.

Throughout the Autumn term year 4 have been learning how to play the recorder. We began learning the single note B and progressed to be able to play a complete tune. After lots of practice we are now able to read and play the notes B, A, G, E, D, F and C on the recorder. We then began to practice a playing a tune on the recorder and finally performed the notes we had learnt in a tune as part of a team. Well done year 4!

First time performing on the recorder.

Final performance! Superb work!

MAKING AN ELECTRICAL GAME

Throughout this term in year 4, we have investigated a range of electrical games in preparation to create our own Egyptian themed electrical game. During the investigation we looked at the games Operation, Buzz and The Fishing Game. We looked at how the electrical components are used and inserted into each game. We decided to base our game on Operation as this links to Ancient Egypt and mummification. We then completed the Focused Practical task, we recapped on how to create a simple electrical circuit to light a bulb then tested two different ways of making a switch. We made a flick switch out of split pins and paper clips and a press switch out of folded paper and foil. We then added these switches into our circuits.

The next step in the process was to design our games. We decided that our product had to be fun and entertaining for children with an electrical component. We then made a list of what we would need and wrote out a method.

Then came the exciting part, we got to make our games! Firstly, we drew our designs onto the front and had help to cut out the pieces which would be removed. Then we stuck a layer of foil onto the top of the back layer and added a hole for the wire. Once we has stuck each of the layers together we began to attach each part of the electrical circuit. We attached the wire from the foil on to the battery and the batter to the tweezers. Finally, we inserted the battery to power the circuit and tested our game.

The Final stage of our D&T project was to evaluate our final product. We were all extremely happy with our games, we all made an Egyptian themed Operation game with a bulb that would light up if the player touched the edges of the mummy.

LIGHT BULB OBSERVATION

Today in year 4 we observed what happens to a battery powered light bulb over time. We set up a simple circuit and observed the light bulb, noticing that it was very bright. Later in the day we made another observation and noticed that bulb was a little bit dimmer. We discussed that the brightness of the bulb had reduced because the power from the battery was being used up. Eventually, by the end of the day we made a final observation and noticed that the bulb had completely gone out. We discussed how the power from the battery had been completely used up from the bulb and there was no longer any power left to light the bulb.

SORTING BATTERY POWERED AND MAINS POWERED APPLIANCES

This afternoon in year 4 we had a fun, practical lesson identifying, classifying and grouping household item into a Venn diagram. We made a note of items that we use everyday then sorted them into the diagram showing which are battery powered, which are mains powered and which do not use electricity at all.

Today, year 3 were visited by someone very special!

We were very lucky to be visited by Mr Thresh who was a child living in Hull during World War Two. Before meeting Mr Thresh, we spent some time discussing what we would like to know if we were to meet someone who had survived the war and the children came up with lots of interesting questions. We were interested to know what it was like to go to school, what jobs the men and women in the city did, what it was like having to go to an air raid shelter and how the rationed food was managed. We were also interested to find out what it was like to be evacuated however, Mr Thresh was not evacuated from the city, he stayed in Hull at home with his family. Therefore, he was able to provide us with information of his first hand experiences of living in a city while it was under attack.

We thoroughly enjoyed talking to Mr Thresh and fining out the answers to our questions and more about living though WWII.

Thank you Mr Thresh!
