At Christopher Pickering, we believe that enhancing our subjects is essential to further children’s understanding and passion for particular disciplines. We organise trips, host extra curricular clubs and often invite visitors in the help embed the children’s understanding and to bring learning to life.
Throughout the year we organise themed days/weeks to further develop the opportunities we give our pupils and regularly invite parents in to share and celebrate the achievements of the school.
Geography Enrichment Days
World Water Day
Do you know that 785 million people around the world do not have access to safe drinking water? That is 1 in every 9 people!
This year, we will be learning about Groundwater which accounts for 40% of the worlds water. Groundwater is an important part of climate change adaptation process and is often a solution for people without access to safe water. However, due to pollution and dense population in certain areas this means that this resource is depleting. We will be highlighting the importance of groundwater and how important it is that we take care of it.
Earth Day
What is Earth Day?
Earth Day, celebrated on 22nd April each year, is the annual event dedicated to awareness about the various environmental challenges that face our planet.
Co-ordinated by the Earth Day Network, 193 countries around the world have their own version of celebrations.
In many places, Earth Day forms part of Earth Week: a longer period of climate awareness that includes activities and campaigns.
During Earth Day this year, we will be learning about things such as plastic pollution, particularly in the worlds seas and oceans and we will be calculating our own carbon footprint and learning about ways in which we can reduce it.
World Rainforest Day
Linking with their summer term topic, the Year 4 children will be presenting to the rest of the school and parents about the dangers the worlds rainforests are facing. The children will be setting the rest of the school a range of activities to complete to raise awareness and to find out what we can do to help.
Clubs
The HUB environment club runs during the Spring and Summer term. Within this club the children learn about developing a sustainable environment within the school grounds and shares practical ideas as to how they can develop this at home. The children work as a team to make the school grounds a more attractive habitat for wildlife by growing wildflower gardens, creating bug hotels, hanging bird boxes and planting hedgerow.
