In History, year 5 have been learning all about Ancient Greece. Today, we focused on a fearless Macedonian king and military genius, Alexander the Great. The children worked in groups to piece together a timeline of Alexander the Great’s life and important  achievements.

We learnt lots of knew sticky knowledge and gathered the causes and consequences to his actions in Ancient Greece.

Year 5 music lesson

This week in music, the children were able to produce their first sounds using the clarinet. Lots of children found this hard to start off with and couldn’t get their mouths in the correct configuration to produce a sound on the reed. Through lots of determination the whole class were proud to be able to make their first sounds.

Today, year 5 were lucky enough to have a visit from members of the Bahai faith who explained how they expressed their faith. The children were able to understand and explore the Bahai faith. They asked excellent questions about the faith and were wowed with the religious beliefs that they held (equality and unity). The children really enjoyed looking at the different places of worship where people of the Bahai faith have services.

One point perspective art work

Within our art lessons this half term, Y6 have been focusing on creating depth and accurate proportions through the use of one-point perspective drawing techniques. In this particular lesson, we practised drawing the Humber Bridge thinking about the ‘vanishing point’ and how to ensure everything led to the one-point perspective. Great work year 6!

Balanced Arguments

Our writing focus in English at the moment is ‘balanced arguments’ and Year 6 have been enjoying to opportunity to consider positives and negatives relating to a range of topics. We have also had the opportunity to take part in verbal debates and the children were fantastic at voicing their opinions and backing up their arguments with evidence and statistics to help justify their viewpoints.

North and South America locational knowledge

Year 6 have been studying the continents of North and South America and have been locating the countries, using atlases, which form these continents. We were amazed by the sheer size of these continents and how far reaching they are to the north and south of the globe! We then used digimap online to investigate levels of precipitation, average temperature, and population density of different regions within these continents.

Girls Football Gets Underway

Tonight, our sporting year got underway with the Hull Active School’s Girls 7s Qualifiers. Attending the competitions were teams from Eastfield Primary, Kingswood Parks and Francis Askew. We had two teams attend, many of whom were making their footballing debuts for the school.

In the end, the results didn’t go our way and our teams finished 5th and 4th, so did not qualify for the finals. However, they improved their performance every game and played with smiles on their faces. A huge well done girls, we’re really proud of your efforts!

They couldn’t believe how many instruments there were. They particularly liked the saxophone and the Bassoon! Year 5 also looked at the rhythm and pulse of different songs.

Year 5 Computing

This week the year 5’s have been looking at describing strategies for keeping personal information private and also explaining what a weak and a strong password is whilst knowing how to create a strong password.

They were excellent detectives in the lesson and were able to retrieve a fake pupils details from social media posts that she had given. They were able to suggest what strategies she used to protect her information and where she went wrong with advice what she could do next time.

Who is Jane Goodhall?

Year 5 learnt all about the famous scientist, Jane Goodhall. We learnt that she is a British scientist who has studied chimpanzees for many years. She is considered to be the world expert on chimpanzees and their behaviour!

The children then used their research skills, along with the information they learnt, to create a poster all about Jane Goodhall. Here are some of our creations!
