Y4 End-of-term fire!

Today we finished a busy half term with a lovely fire in our forest school. This is the first time these Y4s have had a fire at school, so we spent some time learning about fire safety and following the rules. We then had a lovely afternoon drinking hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows. Well done children and enjoy your week off!

Safer Internet Day – Guinness World Record

As part of Internet Safety Day 2021, Year 3 have found out about what reliability online means. This linked in nicely with what we have previously discovered, in our computing lessons, about the accuracy of information on websites. To celebrate this day some of our year 3s have taken part in signing a pledge, to promise to keep ourselves safe online and post reliable content. This is part of The UK Safer Internet Centre and 2Simple’s task to break an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS ™ title for Safer Internet Day. Hopefully, we can be part of a new world record! Here are some posters our online learners made to reiterate the message about reliable online content.

Well done to our home learners who also made some fantastic posters.

Snowy Day Fun

Year Four love keeping in touch and today we shared pictures of our snow day fun on Purple Mash so that we can see what our class mates are doing both in school and at home.

Children’s Mental Health Week

With the theme for this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week being Express Yourself, Year 3 have been creating origami dogs, making squiggles and seeing what they could see in them, and enjoying mindful colouring.  These activities demonstrated that although all of our work was different, it was equally special.

Y3 working hard on there mindfulness.

‘Spoof’ Websites

In Year 3 we used the internet to research Christopher Columbus and from the range of information found, we discovered that some information held on websites may not be accurate or true. Year 3 now know that they need to think critically about the results found, when using search engines. From this we went onto create our own ‘spoof’ websites to demonstrate how easily anyone can create a webpage.  Here are a few our home learners have made.

Y3 Cartographers!

This term in year Three, we are learning to become cartographers – drawing and creating maps. We looked closely at a sketch map and discussed who might need, use or draw a sketch map. We then used digital tools such as google maps and google earth to look at the area local to our school from which we created superb sketch maps – take a look.

.

Maisy’s map could direct you from  CPPS to Little Sainsbury’s or Alid! Superb work!

Then we looked at the important details included in a map and learned how to read and use a key. We explored symbols and talked about which symbols were most effective when creating a key.

We spoke to Mr Wileman, our site supervisor, and asked to look at the maps of the school which he uses. We used the Key to identify the places which we use within our large, school building and explored the sizes that were represented to scale.

We are looking forward to getting out and about, to enable us to put our mapping skills into practise with some Geographical fieldwork.

Y4 Science

This term, Y4 students are being Biologists. We began by learning about the digestive system and the journey which our food takes through the body in order to provide it with nutrients.

We then focussed in on each of the organs within the digestive system and learned about their function.

By studying diagrams, we concluded that animals have digestive systems but that they differ from ours, to adapt to their diet.

This week in Science, we used a mirror to take a closer look at our teeth. We discovered that the teeth within our mouth have different names and each has a different function.

We likened the incisor teeth to a knife – they chop our food.

We likened the canine teeth to a fork – they hold the food and enable us to tear it.

We likened the premolar and the molar teeth to a lego brick – with their bumpy surface, these teeth grind the food to create smaller particles for us to swallow and aid the digestive process.

We particularly enjoyed exploring the teeth that various animals have. We were able to conclude that carnivores has greater canine and incisor teeth to help them bite into, tear and chew meat and that herbivore animals mostly use their premolar and molar teeth to eat.

Children’s Mental Health Week – Y4

Our home-learners and in-school students have really taken onboard the messages from mental health awareness week. We have enjoyed expressing ourselves and taking time to consider what makes us happy, especially during these unusual times.

Y4 had fun with the 1-minute-doodle-challenge, turning a squiggle into a picture.

They loved creating Origami dogs in various sizes and with different types of paper. Some pupils, such as Izzy, have gone on to learn more origami in their own time and so she is teaching us how to make a heart this afternoon! (Just in time for valentines day:) )

We thought about what makes us happy at play. We are a sporty lot! You’ll find us refining our rugby skills or playing football. Some of us just like to hang with our friends and play imaginative games.

At home and in school, we  linked our English work to Children’s mental health week and have been making entries in an emotions journal. We found the structure was really helpful and that the pupils were able to really drill down to their feelings and express themselves rather than just generally considering ‘How are you?’

PE with Alex from the Tigers Trust, gives us the chance to express ourselves and work with our classmates, physically and mentally, towards a common goal. And of course, the chance to HAVE FUN!

Today was our second HAS virtual competition and this time it was sportshall athletics.

This competition followed the British Pentathlon’s format of five events: 10x10m shuttle, standing long jump, vertical jump, chest push and speed bounce. All children completed the events and their scores have been sent in to find out how we fared against the other Hull Schools. Our home learners also took part virtually and we had lots of scores submitted which have been passed on to HAS. However, we did also have out own competition and worked out the winning girls and winning boys. Well done Y4, you’ve all done fantastic!

Our top three girls: Issy (1st), Alesha (2nd) and Ava (3rd) & top three boys: Ewan (1st), Connor (2nd) and Jake (3rd).

Jessica with a superb long jump.

Speed bound is probably the toughest event, here is Evie giving it her best!
