Belief in the Community

As Theologists in Year 4, we have been exploring some images of a religious celebration and used our skills of inference and deduction to identify which religion this event is special to and what the celebration may have been about.

From the images, we identified that it was a celebration that is held in the Jewish community by how the gentlemen were dressed in the images and that a special meal was being shared in what appeared to be an outdoor living space.

Miss Stewart then revealed that the images depicted the traditional Jewish Festival of Sukkot,  We then watched a video-clip, whereupon Adam explained what the Festival of Sukkot is and the importance it holds to those who belong to the Jewish community.  From this we were able to share the new learning that we had acquired from this lesson…

Differences and similarities between the Christian celebration of Harvest and the Jewish celebration of Sukkot were discussed and we identified that both faiths celebrate a significant event in Autumn;  each is a celebration where other people are remembered;  both faith communities pray to God and there is a commonality whereby food is shared.

Y4 Journalists

Today the Journalists in Y4 were using  talk partners to share ideas, edit and improve their writing when recording direct speech within a paragraph. The children talked about their language choices as they wanted to hook the reader in and impress their Editor!

Musical Maestros

We in Year 4 have been having a fabulous time learning to play various tunes on the glockenspiel this term.

Following the Charanga music scheme has allowed to become more knowlegable about both the theory and language of music, whilst having fun playing various musical pieces such as ‘DEF-inately’, ‘What’s Up?’ and ‘Strictly D’ to name but a few.

We are currently learning and perfecting a traditional festive tune so… watch this space!

Y4 PSHE – Being Me In My World

In Year 4, we have had lots of interesting discussions and debates on the various topics in our Jigsaw scheme this term.

So far…we have been exploring the concept of inclusion and what it means to belong to our community groups as opposed to being excluded an not involved. It was agreed that being included makes us feel respected, valued and part of a team within all the groups that we belong to.

We have identified the roles of the adults who work within the Christopher Pickering community. After much debate, the children all agreed that all of the adult roles are equally important to ensure that our school functions on a daily basis so that we can be the best we can be.

Exploring the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC 1989) was enlightening for all the children who are now more aware of the rights which they have, as well as to how each of the articles within this important document endeavour to make sure they are safe and cared for.

Further discussions upon the current rewards and consequences utilised within our school community as opposed to those which were used in education establishments in the past, made the children more aware of how the strategies today are more considerate and respectful of their human rights.

Science in music

Year 4 were very lucky to have been visited by students from the Hull University Music department.  In collaboration with the Hull Music Hub, they delivered a workshop to our the children about sound and music. It was a fabulous end to their science topic about sound, and an excellent opportunity to use their knowledge to discover and investigate how science can be applied to real life, everyday things. The children were able to apply their understanding of sound to work out how each of the instruments worked and why they were making the different pitches. It was also an incredible opportunity for the children to see some real live musicians up close and have a play with the instruments.

Year 4 Music

Year 4 have been busy appraising music and learning new songs on the glockenspiel.

In celebration of black history month, we listened to and appraised ‘What a wonderful world’ by the black artist Louis Armstrong. We spoke a little about his history and when he wrote the song. We also discussed what it might have meant to music and black people back in the 60s.

There were mixed reviews, but the children are getting better at really listening to the music and talking about how as song is it made up.

The children then started learning a new song on the Glockenspiel, I wonder if you can tell which song it is from the video clip?

Black History Month

Throughout October, we are celebrating and teaching children about the importance of Black History Month within school. We always openly discuss Black History throughout our day-to-day learning at Christopher Pickering, however it is great to have even more of a focus on celebrating individuals who have overcome adversity during their lifetimes.

We have taken opportunities within whole school and phase assemblies to discuss why it is so important we discuss Black History and how we, as a country, can learn and move forward from mistakes that have been made in the past. We have also been watching videos and discussing individuals such as Rosa Parks, Mary Seacole and Harriet Tubman – 3 amazingly brave and influential black women who stood up for their beliefs and freedom. These assemblies have stimulated powerful and meaningful discussions amongst our children.

Meet our new school council!

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day we wore yellow to school and in return we donated money to the charity Young Minds Trust, which helps young people who are struggling with their mental health. In our assembly, we learned about what mental health is, what we can do to improve our mental health and what we should do if we are every feeling sad. Throughout the day, we took part in mindfulness sessions and throughout the week, we will be completing activities based around promoting positive mental health.

School Council

Over the past few days, the children from Years 1-6 have been taking part in electing their new school councillors. The children who were interested in being a school councillor wrote their names down on our sign up sheets then presented a speech to their year group, stating why they would make a super school councillor. The children then voted for the two children they would like to represent their year group at school council meetings.
