To launch our new topic, ‘Where do astronauts go?’, Y2 have had a fantastic Wow Day. They became astronauts for the day; creating their own astronaut fact file. Then they designed their own rockets.

For sports relief this year we covered 3 elements to help us get our ‘game on.’ We learnt about the heart and the affects of exercise on the heart. We put our hearts to work during our active mile. We also looked at the body and learnt about how to be healthy. Each class designed and made a healthy meal or snack. We also spoke about our soul, and how we can be calm and happy, for this we did some yoga and a guided meditation.

In Year 2, we have been using our artistic flair to draw portraits of some of the most memorable monarchs over the centuries.
We found Queen Elizabeth I fascinating as we loved her lavish dresses and found lots of differences between her and Queen Elizabeth II.
We used pencils as our media and observed and drew her face, patterns on her dress by adding dots and lines and have begun to explore the use of lines of different thickness to create texture and tone.
Here are some maths sheets to do at home with your child. These topics have already been covered in class since September and would make good practise.
Work through them at your own pace and bring any completed sheets to your teacher. Don’t worry if you can’t do them, only do what you can.

This week we are looking at how different fruit and vegetables grow.
We drew some seeds and predicted which will turn into a seedling first.
Then we planted some seeds, covered them with soil, watered them and placed them near a window.
We all had a fabulous time celebrating World Book Day last Thursday. World Book Day’s mission this year was to ‘Share a Million Stories’. Therefore we came to school dressed as our favourite book characters to share stories that we love. Have a look at our fantastic costumes below. Can you spot any familiar characters?
In the afternoon, we split into house teams to have a ‘Share a Story’ session. The teachers shared a story with their house first.
Then, the children shared stories with someone from a different year group! We had a fabulous time sharing our stories!
Bailey loves to read at home and reads every night to his little brother Jaidon – well done Bailey! Reading superstar!
My favourite books are The Snail and the Whale and The Gruffalo. I also love Oliver’s Vegetables. My favourite part in the story is where he finds all of the vegetables and eats them for dinner then he realises that he likes them!
Today in Year 2 we carried out lots of discussions about what the word ‘identity’ means and how we need to keep our identity safe whilst we are online.
We had lots of in-depth discussions about what we do online: websites, APP’s and games and which ones we shared information with other people. We talked about why we shouldn’t share personal information online and how to avoid doing this.
First we created an avatar to use as a username which would allow us to keep our identities hidden whilst online.
Then we created logos for the things we all access online such as Youtube, Netflix and online games and thought about which ones we had to be careful to keep our identity safe.
Frankie is a superstar – she is not only brilliant at reading but she loves reading too and knows lots about different authors. Well done Frankie!
I love reading books like The Owl Babies. I am reading ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’. I really like this book. I have lots of books by the author Julie Donaldson including: Tiddler, The Gruffalo, Room on The Broom, Tabby Mctat and Stick Man.
As well as reading the books, I like to look out for the hidden Gruffalo illustrations.
My favourite book though is ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell. When I read it with my Daddy, He says I am really good at doing the voices of the baby owls. I got this book from Father Christmas, he also brought me ‘Mog – The forgetful Cat’ by Judith Kerr. I really like that book too. Mog forgets everything and he forgets about his cat flap and a robber steals from Mog’s house while every one is asleep but Mog meows at the window and he scares the robber who gets arrested.
Chris from The University of Hull has been coming in to Christopher Pickering Primary School every Friday for the last 4 weeks to teach Dance and Drama to our Key Stage 1 children.
On Friday (31st January) the children performed a dance to the rest of the school. The performers and the audience both really enjoyed the performance.
Well done to our Key Stage One children! You were fantastic!
