Year 1 loved being Historians by putting themselves into the shoes of Beatrix Potter to find out what life was like her for during the Victorian Era. We know to be successful Historians we need to look at different sources of evidence. We discovered that she was taught by her very own governess at home by looking closely at a painting. Using this piece of evidence the children asked lots of questions and came up with their own conclusions:

Millie- But when did she play with her friends?

Olivia- That would be so boring!

Teddy- Would they be as strict as Victorian schools?

We then had fun acting out a day in the life of Beatrix Potter. Here are some of the things we learnt:

She was woken up by her maid/governess using candles if it was dark.

She would then be served breakfast prepared by servants which was a huge meal consisting of ham, bacon, eggs and fish!

Cup and ball.

Beatrix Potter had toys such as a skipping rope.

We then compared this life to ours in the 21st century.

We looked at some pictures created by Piet Mondrian and noticed that he uses lines and blocks of colour.

We used 2Paint to create our own versions of Mondrian’s art.

Year 2 have been learning about the importance of Palm Sunday and what it means to Christians.

We read a story about Palm Sunday then re-enacted Jesus arriving into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. We had a very excited crowd waving palm leaves to welcome Jesus.

We also wrote the key words and phrases on a palm leaf template.

medicine safety

This week Year 1 have been talking about when they are ill.

Our adults at home look after us if we are not well and give us lots of cuddles.

Our teachers look after us too if we do not feel well at school.

Sometimes we need medicine to make us feel better.

We looked at some different types of medicines that we have in our houses.

We found out that medicines can be dangerous as well as making us better.

We looked carefully at each picture and box. We found that they all have instructions on them telling you how to take them and how many times you can take it.

We all decided that our adults at home give us the right amount of medicine because they read the instructions to keep us safe.

The Monkey King

This week in RE, Year 1 have been listening to the Buddhist faith story ‘The Monkey King‘.

We really enjoyed the story and how kind the Monkey King was to his followers.

We talked about how Buddhists listen to this story and it helps them to be kinder to each other just like The Monkey King was to his followers and how the King was kind to The Monkey King after he saved the monkeys.

We thought how we could be kind to each other just like the monkeys in the story.

We also talked about how Buddhists cherish this story as it is a value of their faith and one they believe represents their God.

We had chance to act out the story of ‘The Monkey King’ and enjoyed retelling each other what happened.

Year 1 fieldwork

Year 1 are becoming confident geographers. At the start of the lesson we re-capped the 7 continents and understand that we live in Europe. We then used Digimaps to explore the United Kingdom, England and finally looked at Hull the city where we live. After, we looked at a variety of maps and photographs to identify our school. We were really interested to see how things look as a ‘birds eye view’ on aerial mode compared to ground level.

Next we set off on a walk around the school site to identify different features within school.

When we got back to class we started to put our features onto a key which will later be placed on our sketch map next lesson.

Clean and Healthy

Jigsaw Jack has been helping Year 1 find out how to keep clean and healthy this week.

We started our lesson by telling Jigsaw Jack how germs spread. We decided there are germs when things are dirty and that it is important to keep things clean. In school, we keep our hands clean through the day by washing them and using sanitiser. The cleaners help keep our classroom clean by washing the tables and doors.

Adults at home keep things clean and healthy by washing surfaces and clothes and making sure we stay clean.

We looked at pictures of things we have in our houses that we use to keep us clean and healthy.

Not everything that adults use at home are safe. Some things we use to clean can make us ill.

We sorted lots of items into which room we might use them in.

We decided that not all things used in a home to keep things clean are safe for us to use.

We think soap and toothpaste is safe for us but we shouldn’t be touching bleach or toilet cleaner. We found out some of the things our adults use to clean contain chemicals which can be dangerous for us to use.

Sublime Science

To kick start science week, the whole school had a visit from Sublime Science.

All children throughout the school had the opportunity to participate in fun and interactive workshops hosted by a great scientist called Harry. He was amazing and carried out some brilliant experiments like putting a skewer through a balloon which didn’t pop!!!  He showed us how to defy gravity and swung a bucket of water around his head and it didn’t spill!

We all had such a great time and it made us want to continue learning about science! Some of us said that we would definitely be carrying out a science activity at home for our #ScienceSelfie competition!

British Science Week in Year 2!

Today, Year 2 enjoyed their parent workshop as part of British Science Week.

We were investigating how to make a strong bridge out of a piece of paper.

We made a prediction then tested our theories with the help of our extra adults. We discovered that folding the paper into a channel shape allowed us to put lots of weight on the bridge before it collapsed.

We repeated the investigation with tin foil and predicted which material would be stronger.

Finally, we did a whole class investigation with a large sheet of paper to see if that would hold the same weight as a small piece. We found out that it could only hold 3 coins before collapsing! Enes said he thought it was because we’d made the bridge too wide!

Lots of great science and engineering ideas were explored.
