Celebrating Christmas in Year 1.

Throughout December the children have identified what senses they use to recognise the signs which tell us that Christmas is coming.

‘I know it’s Christmas when we put our tree up and the elf comes and does cheeky stuff.’,

‘I can see lights and decorations everywhere.’

‘We open our calendars to countdown to Christmas day and eat a chocolate everyday.’

‘I know Christmas is going to be soon when it feels cold and it’s frosty and slippery outside. I need to wear my coat, hat and gloves everyday.’

The children also celebrated with a delicious Christmas dinner and Christmas party.

‘I love eating yummy turkey and sausages with my Christmas dinner.’

‘I can’t wait to hear my cracker go bang and put my party hat on.’

‘I like the smell of hot chocolate when it’s cold outside’

‘My favourite songs are Christmas songs, I like to sing along to them and dance.’

Finally, the children learnt about why Christians celebrate Christmas, performing a traditional nativity.

In Year 1, the children developed a wide range of art and design techniques using colour, pattern, texture, line and shape. First they explored different lines and patterns such as curves and zigzags.

In the next lesson we made observational drawings of buildings in the local area. We chose to focus on The Deep and the Humber Bridge as the children were familiar with these buildings.

Next we introduced the artist David Hockney to inspire the children to create their own piece of art in his style.

Here are some of the final pieces. To create this the children used the skills they have previously learnt and a combination of pencils and chalk pastels.

White Ribbon Day

On Monday, Year One were introduced to the meaning behind White Ribbon Day.

Special visitors came from the police and fire services to remind the children of the importance of having kind hands, kind feet and to speak to a trusted person if they are ever worried.

The children then signed a White Ribbon Promise which we have displayed proudly on our classroom doors.

Alexander Calder sculpture

This week Year 2 have completed their final art piece based on the work of Alexander Calder.

We looked at sculptures that Alexander Calder has produced and how some of these are are hanging pieces which can move in the wind. We talked about how a sculpture is a 3D piece of art and how we could create something similar.

We started by exploring different materials to make 3D shapes. We used paper, card and straws to create our shapes and worked together to join some of these shapes together to make a simple structure.

Year 2 discussed the shapes they had practised which could be incorporated into the final piece of art work. they also discussed materials and thought wire would work well with the paper and card to create a hanging 3D sculpture which would move, inspired by those Alexander Calder produced.

In groups, Year 2 produced shapes using paper and card in primary colours to hang on their sculpture. They also used craft wire to create the hanging effect of all the pieces on the structure ensuring there was patterns incorporated similar to the ones they identified in Alexander Calder’s paintings.

Year 2 are very proud of their finished sculpture.

Learning songs for our nativity!

Year 1 have really enjoyed rehearsing songs for their nativity this half term. They have worked really hard to learn each new song and the corresponding actions. Some of the children were confident enough to sing solo! It was a joy to see the songs they have worked so hard on being performed in front of an audience for parents and carers.

Creating secondary colours

This week in art, Year 2 have been looking at the colours Alexander Calder uses in his paintings.

We noticed he likes bright colours such as blue, yellow and red. We got to talk about these and found out they were called primary colours.

Year 2 talked about how these primary colours could be mixed to make a different colour. We discovered these new colours are called secondary colours.

We mixed our primary colours to see what secondary colours we could create.

Blue + Yellow = Green

Red + Blue = Purple

Yellow + Red = Orange

Ball skills

This week in Year 2 we have been looking at ball skills using our feet.

We have looked at how we pass the all accurately and with control to get it to where we want it.  We know how to use the inside of our foot and the amount of force we need to use based on the distance we want the ball to travel.

We practised our skills with a partner before we played a game of ‘Mud Monsters‘.

We had to pass our ball to our partners and move around the hall whilst dribbling using control. If our ball touched a cone then we became stuck and couldn’t move.

It was a fun game to play and helped us think about our passing skills.

Exploring the character Finn

Year 2’s fiction text this half term is The Star Maker’s Apprentice. This week they have explored the main character, Finn. They wrote questions that they wanted to ask Finn and then did hot seating in the role of him.

They then used these ideas to write a diary entry in the role of Finn. Later in the week, they generated adjectives to describe Finn and wrote some fantastic character descriptions. Well done Year 2!

Anti-Bullying Week in Year 2

Year 2 have taken part in anti-bullying week this week. They wore odd socks for our odd socks day and took part in a whole school assembly with Mrs Marson. In PSHE, they then looked at how people might feel in different situations. They then discussed how small acts of kindness can put an end to bullying and discussed ways in which we can ensure we are an anti-bullying school.

Silent Night

This week in music Year 2 are continuing to appraise the songs we are going to perform in our Christmas service.

This week we have appraised ‘Silent Night‘. We liked this song as it was slow and made us all feel relaxed.

The notes were very long and we talked about how we need to fill our lungs with air to hold the long  notes when we perform.

We listened to different versions of the song and talked about the different instruments we could hear. We identified a guitar and violin on one version but could only hear the piano on another. We liked the sound of the violin as this was gentle and soft.
