Significant Saints

In R.E, Year 4 have been using the I-pads and QR codes to research the four Patron Saints of the United Kingdom. We have identified and compared similar traits and qualities between these significant men (Each were Christians; selfless; brave; kind; loyal etc), as well as the heroic and brave acts they were recognised for.

Shrove Tuesday and Lent

The children in Year 3 have been learning about the Christian concepts of ‘Shrove Tuesday’ and ‘Lent’. We discussed the tradition of using up foods (eg eggs, butter and milk), which were usually given up during the fasting period of Lent. We also learned how Shrove Tuesday is celebrated around the world:

Sweden – Shrove Tuesday is called ‘Fettsdagen’ which translates to Fat Tuesday and small pastries are eaten called ‘Semla’ instead of pancakes!

France – Shrove Tuesday is called ‘Mardi Gras’ which translates to Fat Tuesday and pancakes called ‘crepes’ are eaten!

Portugal – Shrove Tuesday is called ‘Carnaval’ but instead of pancakes small doughnuts are eaten called ‘Malasadas’.

Iceleand – Shrove Tuesday is called ‘Sprengidagur’ which translates to ‘Bursting Day’. However, pancakes are not eaten but instead a dish of salted meats and peas is served!

After completing our work we had our own mini celebration with delicious pancakes – YUM!

Primary science quality mark

Here at Christopher Pickering Primary School we are very proud to have achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark.

PSQM-Lge_GOLD MASTER

“High quality displays and thoughtful evaluations show a shared and demonstrated understanding of the importance of science”.

“The portfolio demonstrates a range of teaching and learning approaches, including drama, the use of practical materials, modelling and children planning their own investigations”.

“Differentiated learning has been carefully evaluated to ensure that children are accessing at their own level, supporting LA and challenging the HA”.

Every Friday children from Y 5/6 are invited to Friday Lunch Club. The children create, cook then eat their own healthy pitta pizza. The children are also encouraged to try something a little different with their meal, something they may not have eaten before. It has become a very popular event and the children appear to love the experience.

Budding Linguists!

In Years 3 and 4 the children have been practising their linguistic skills during mini role play activities. The children confidently met and greeted each other and introduced themselves before finishing with a goodbye!

Bonjour!/Salut! (Hello!/Hi!)
Comment tu t’appelles? (What is your name?)
Je m’appelle … (My name is …)
Et toi? (And you?)
Au revoir!/ A bientot! (Goodbye!/See you soon!)
