Last week, as Scientists in the HUB, we considered what was light and dark and how light allows us to see. This week we explored which objects were a source of light and which were reflectors. We went outside to further explore reflections using a mirror, thinking about how the light travels from the object to the mirror and then bounces into our eye, creating an image. We number played games using the mirror to spy around a wall.

We then followed instructions to make our very own periscope, just like in a submarine, which allowed us to peer over the top of a place. The mirrors reflected the image and we could count how many secret fingers were being shown! Great work!

As a class we have developed some brilliant signifiers to help us tell the story of ‘The Way Back Home”. As we can confidently retell the story, we were able to confidently write our own version of the story, making great use of word banks and our independent spelling books to improve our work. We were really proud of this work!

Friendships, Fun and Laughter

We have had great fun this week, welcoming George into our class. We know how important it is to work hard at school but also to have fun, lots of laughs and friends that we can play a great game of Tig with!

Outdoor Sensory Nature Walk

We love being outdoors and enjoying nature.

We have used all our senses during our ‘sensory walk’.

We have gathered lots of leaves that have fallen off the trees to use in our autumnal crafts.

Autumn Placemats

Our Sensory Learners have designed the most wonderful seasonal placemats using the leaves that they gathered on their ‘sensory nature walk’.

We love them and can’t wait to use them during autumn for our ‘Communication Breakfasts’.

In memory of our wonderful Queen

Our Sensory Learners created  some beautiful collage portraits in memory of our wonderful Queen.

We demonstrated good sitting, looking and listening, turn taking and scissor skills whilst making our portraits.

We showed great interest in books about our Queen and were able to turn pages and enjoy the illustrations.

Our favourite part of the day was when we viewed a little film clip starring The Queen and Paddington Bear. Once again, demonstrating good sitting, looking and listening.

Reflecting and Remembering

Today was a special day across the whole school as we spent it remembering the life of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. In the HUB we engaged in a range of activities that helped us to reflect upon her amazing reign. We watched when ‘Paddington Met The Queen’ which made us really giggle and then followed instructions to make a marmalade sandwich. There were mixed reviews as to the taste of these but it we did a great job using our skills to make them!

 

We waited with patience and respect in the school hall to sign the book of condolences. Our names are now recorded within Christopher Pickering History as part of this very significant event.

We discussed why Union flags have been flying at half-mast across the national during the period of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II. Flags are lowered to half-mast as a symbol of respect and mourning so we made our own mini flags to show our respects.

During our creative choice session, Amelia made a beautiful crown to show people that she is remembering the life of Queen Elizabeth.

As Scientists, this half term we will be learning about light.

This week, we examined what light is and how we need light to see. We played the feely-bag game and some items were really hard to determine when we couldn’t see them! We explored how our sight changes when we sat in the dark den and went onto consider what a source of light is. We were able to sort sources of light into the categories of natural and man-made which led to lots of great questions being asked.
