Year 2 PSHE

Over the last couple of weeks Year 2 have been learning about the importance of teamwork.

Children worked together to plan and design a bird for our ‘Garden of Dreams and Goals’

This week, children worked together to make their birds! Fantastic teamwork was demonstrated by all groups!

London Experience January 2023

The Y6 house captains and Y5 school councillors were given the fantastic opportunity to visit London to experience our capital city, see some of the famous landmarks and to find out about Democracy and how this country is ran by visiting parliament. Unfortunately, due to the rail strikes we had to postpone the date of our initial trip which meant that we couldn’t visit the Houses of Parliament.

On the 11th January, we set off from Hull to Kings Cross which took us just under 3 hours. When we arrived we headed straight to the underground and caught the tube to Tower Bridge. When we got there we ate lunch in the sunshine overlooking the Tower of London which made a fantastic spot to have something to eat.

We went into the Tower of London which is a historic castle originally built William Conqueror where he built a stone tower fortress overlooking London. Over the years we found out that it has been used for a multitude of things – a prison, a place to torture criminals, a zoo, the Royal Armouries, The Royal Mint and a place to protect the crown jewels. We saw the empty case where the King Edward crown had been taken to prepare for King Charles’ coronation!

After spending a few hours in the Tower of London we made our way onto Tower Bridge and identified all of the landmarks along the River Thames. Then we went to see the Horse Guards and made our way to Downing Street. Here we spent a bit of time learning about who goes to Downing Street, who lives there and why. We were lucky enough to see Rishi Sunak, well his car, whizz by into Downing Street – there were lots of police vehicles with the cars!

We then walked up to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben and found out about what happens in these buildings and how decisions in these buildings have an impact on us. The Palace of Westminster and Big Ben are synonymous with democracy and have become a symbol of parliament around the world – our school council elections are based on the voting systems that happen in this country when electing a political party representative.

After this we went up to Buckingham Palace and walked through St James’s park before heading back to Kings Cross and back home to Hull! A fantastic experience!

Y4 Begin Chess Tuition!

Today, Mr Morgan’s class started their chess tuition sessions. Funded by Chess in Schools, Christopher Matthews will be coming in on a Tuesday to deliver an hour of chess, followed by an after school club.

The children have loved their first session where we began to learn about the individual pieces and how they moved, as well as getting the board set up.

Chess is not only great for the mind, teaching tactics and problem solving but also great for social skills. Honesty, self-belief and respect are huge parts of the game of chess and it was great to see all children start and end their games with a handshake.

Freddie and Rebecca got their board set up correct first time!

Tommy and Rubin set up and ready to play.

PSHCE YEAR 6

What are British Values?

Fundamental British Values underpin what it is to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Great Britain valuing our community and celebrating diversity of the UK. These values are Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance, Individual Liberty.

Why are the 5 British Values important?
We see British Values as underpinning what it is to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Britain. They allow us to create environments free from discrimination, intolerance and hate. They help us to challenge prejudice and stereotyping, whilst strengthening relationships within the community.
As part of our PSHCE/JIGSAW Lesson Year 6 discussed how
these values are clearly evident throughout our school.
Then the children were given a scenario of an event that could happen…
Once the children had read the the news report  they took on the roles of the adults who were directly involved.
These included: a police officer, a fireman, the headmaster of the school, the class teacher and the parents of some of the children involved.
They had to  listen carefully to the views and opinions of  all members of the group. The right to free speech – individual liberty . It was necessary to show respect and tolerance eventhough their views and opinions differed greatly.
They had to abide by the rule of law when it came to important decision making…
Finally, as part of tte democratic process , they had  to decide what steps needed to be taken so that every member of the group was happy with the final outcome .

Yoga

Year 3 are loving our new PE unit for this term.

We are taking part in yoga sessions with Liesel. We have the opportunity to exercise our body and minds.

Through our sessions so far we have practised yoga positions we know and found out how to do new ones. We have practised positions such as the table, ragdoll, downward dog and rabbit. We have really enjoyed learning some new ones, so far we have tried the camel and the sailboat. Some of these positions are really tricky and they take lots of practice and balancing.

We have also enjoyed lots of different breathing exercises. So far, we have enjoyed shark breathing and box breathing. We love how these can make us feel calm and relaxed.

School Council Meeting

This morning, our School Council and House Captains met up with Miss Ewen and Miss Mead to discuss a new strategy which is being put in place over the next couple of weeks. As a council, we spoke about incorporating a whole school suggestions box which will be accessible for all pupils. Children will have the opportunity to submit their own suggestions based on what they would like to see around the school.

To know about a range of jobs and careers

In PSHCE this week, Year 5 were learning about a range of jobs careers. The children began by ordering a list of jobs from most important to least important; we then discussed their thoughts and ideas as to why they had position the cards in their places. Some of the points that were raised were salary, importance to the community and enjoyment. After this, the children worked in groups to come up with the salary of each job/career and they then decided whether the career was underpaid, overpaid or respectfully paid.

This week’s lesson was very important to understand job roles and their benefits and disadvantages.

Well done Y5MEA!

Year 4 have explored the concept of making assumptions of others based on looks alone in this controversial Jigsaw theme this term. In one of our tasks we tried to make assumptions on 4 individuals without knowing their backstory before Miss Stewart revealed the relevant details for each person. Through discussion, we agreed that it is really hard not to make an informed decision on a person and realised that judging someone is a  human trait that is inside all of us.  We also identified that we sometimes make an assumption of an individual based on their appearance alone and all agreed that we should rather get to know a person before we make an assumption or judge them.

YEAR 3 JIGSAW – CELEBRATING DIFFERENCE

This term, the children in Year 3 have been talking about their own family dynamics and sharing their feelings of how being part of, as well as belonging to a family makes them feel. Loved…Happy…Safe…Wanted…Valued…Respected were some of the word which came up most often in our shared discussions. We also shared our understanding  that whilst our own family dynamics may be different with those of our peers,  that family it is about having people in your life who care for you, love you, help you and keep you safe that matters the most. From this we went on to identify some of the other groups that we belong to that are similar to a family because the people that lead these significant groups care for us, help us and want us to be the best that we can be:

School…Breakfast Club…Dance Classes…Football Teams…Gymnastics Club…Martial Art Groups…Brownies…Cricket Club
