Christmas Craft ready for December 1st

Last Thursday our Y56s had a super afternoon of Christmas craft ready for the start of the festive season when they made advent calendars.

The children used a whole host of STEM and art skills to make these excellent calendars for someone at home to enjoy.

Well done children.

Build the School: first building session complete

This week some Y56 child took part in our first ever online Minecraft building activity. Children can now find numerous jobs and projects to complete by speaking to the ‘Mr. Morgan’ NPC (non player character). Seven children worked hard to continue the enormous project of building our school in Minecraft with steady progress made!

Continuing to lay the dining area’s beech floor.

A fantastic afternoon of Badminton

Children in Y56 have been working very hard on their badminton skills lately in preparation for the Hull Active Schools timed badminton championships.

In this variation of the game, teams of five players (ranked 1-5) play one-on-one for two minutes until all players have had a turn, meaning games last 10 minutes. After this time, the team with with the highest aggregate score is the winner.

Our children all worked very hard all afternoon and continually improved, had fun and were incredibly supportive of each other. From 16 teams, our C team finished in 12th, our B team had some VERY close games and eventually finished 6th. However, our A team reached the semi-finals but lost to a very good Eastfield team (who went on to win the final). Our A team then went on to win the play off final, meaning they finished a fantastic third and qualify for the finals night on December 8th!

Well done children!

A Team (L-R): Harry N, Harry M, Callum D, Ewan M & Oliver H.

A, B & C Teams having a fantastic time

We Love Lexia!

We are very lucky in Key Stage 1 because we have just had a bank of iPad’s delivered!

We are going to be using them to help improve our learning. So far, we have been using them for Lexia; an app that helps us with our reading.

These children say that Lexia is their favourite time of the day!

Y6 solve the ‘Rectangle Tangle’!

This week Year 6 have put their fractions knowledge to the test by trying to solve the tricky ‘Rectangle Tangle’ fractions problem.

Children used their conceptual understanding of fractions to figure out the different fractional parts. There were some fantastic problem solving methods used and interesting approaches. Well done children – your reasoning and solving skills are coming on nicely!

Trying Aztec food!

We were so excited this afternoon to try out some of the traditional Aztec foods which we have been learning about in our topic lessons! We had already researched what food the Aztecs used to eat and worked hard to design a delicious Aztec inspired menu. Today we got to try these foods and for most of us, it was the first time we had ever tasted them!

This is what we tried:

90% cocoa chocolate

Papaya

Pomegranate

Mango

Avocado

Peppers

Children in Need 2017

We have come to school dressed in spots for Children in Need today. There are lots of Pudsey Bear’s and Blush’s in school. We also have some very talented families who have designed their own t-shirts.

We also raised money by having a Bake Sale. We had so much fun eating buns and listening to party music!

We can’t wait to find out how much money we raised!

Adding 1 Digit Numbers

Miss Stathers’ Maths class have been learning to add a 2 digit number and a 1 digit number. On Thursday we were solving problems for the workers in the theater.

We had to read the question, work out what the question was asking and then choose a method to find the answer.

Minecraft Education Underway

We are very excited to announce that Minecraft Education has started at Christopher Pickering!

Year 5/6 children will have the opportunity to develop their STEM skills through and educational version of the popular game.

Here is a sneak peak of our first project: building the school!

We are historians!

Today we loved studying primary and secondary sources of evidence to draw conclusions and inferences about Aztec life. We thought really carefully about what the images could teach us and learnt so much without Miss Stainton having to give us any clues or tell us any information! Brilliant independent learning Year 6.
