Hot Cross Buns!!!

Spring is the perfect time for little learners to explore new traditions, and this week we had so much fun discovering Hot Cross Buns. After singing the well-loved rhyme, the children  noticed the words “one a penny, two a penny” and began wondering what hot cross buns are made of and why they’re special. Their curiosity gave us the perfect opportunity to dive deeper.

We looked closely at the ingredients, soft flour, bumpy raisins, and the warm smell of mixed spice.

We talked about the cross on top and explored its meaning for some families at Easter.

Finally, the best part was tasting them!! The children used words like “sweet”, “soft”, and “yummy” to describe them as well as enjoying spreading the butter on.

Pancakes in F1

Today we explored our new balance scales, thinking carefully about how the scales moved, ‘heavier’, ‘lighter’, ‘the same’ and what it meant when they were balanced.

We then talked briefly about the origins of Pancake Day and looked at different types of pancakes across the world; from Russian blinis to the Irish boxty.  All of them were circular shapes.  Fancy that!

The children told us all about the pancakes they had eaten over the holidays.

Autumn used some super sentences.  She told us, “I had strawberry pancakes.”  “I had pancakes at home and at Nana’s.”

Oliver said, “I had jam on the other one and nutella on the other one,” as he counted on his fingers, showing us two.

We looked at the recipe book and measured out the ingredients using our new scales then poured it into the mixing bowl.

Blake added a pinch of salt then Jax started to mix everything together.  “It’s mixed in the flour,” he told us.

Myla knew that they needed cooking ‘in a pan’.  So Mrs Silverwood got cooking.

Nearly everyone thought they were tasty.

“They’re delicious,” said Jacob.

“Really nice, me eat it all,” said Blake.

“Nice,” said Arlo B.

“I just like them,” said Jax.

“I want another one,” said Arlo R.

“I like it really good,” said Nevaeh.

Lunar New Year

We have loved celebrating Lunar New Year. The children were fascinated to discover that this year is the Year of the Horse, and we explored how families around the world celebrate this special festival.

Dragons, Dancing and Dress

We watched videos of dragon dancing and loved the way the dancers moved together. The children also looked closely at traditional clothes, noticing the that they often wear the colour red!

Tasting New Foods

A highlight of the day was trying some traditional foods. The children were very excited to taste noodles, prawn crackers, and to finish with a fortune cookie. They enjoyed comparing the textures and talking about the different flavours and reading the special message inside the cookie.

It has been a fab day celebrating other cultures!

Finding out about different style homes in F1

We have been thinking about houses in F1 recently. Today we went out to hunt for different styles of homes that we can see from our grounds. The children had a great time spotting them and trying hard to use the new words we had discussed before we went outside, such as bungalow, detached and terraced.

Here are a few photographs of us busy at work…

When we got back into school, some of the children used what they’d learnt to build their own homes too!

HOUSES AND HOMES

Exploring our topic ‘Houses and Homes’

This week in F2 the children have been fully immersed in our exciting topic: Houses and Homes. We’ve been hands‑on, creative, and imaginative as we explored what makes a house strong, safe, and cosy.

Brick Printing and Paint Mixing

To kick off our learning, the children used bricks to paint and stamp their very own brick‑wall patterns. Before they began printing, they had a go at mixing paint to create the perfect shade of brown, just like real bricks  They experimented with different colours, noticing how red, yellow, and a tiny bit of black could be blended to make the colour they needed.

Once their paint was ready, the children pressed the bricks onto paper to form strong, sturdy wall patterns. They loved the weight and feel of the bricks and were fascinated by the texture they created.

Becoming Builders

Our construction area transformed into a bustling building site as the children took on the role of builders. Using wooden blocks, bricks and tubes, they worked together to create their own structures.  We talked about what makes a house strong and Ethan said “walls and a roof”. Miss Carrick also expanded on this by discussing the strong foundations of a house. We experimented with balancing and stacking materials, the children showed some fab team work and problem-solving.

Building Dens to Live In

A highlight of the week was our den‑building challenge. Using fabrics, pegs, poles, and lots of imagination, the children built their own little homes to “live in”.

Piet Mondrian

This week, the children had a wonderful time learning about the artist Piet Mondrian, famous for his artwork using primary colours, bold black lines, and simple shapes.

We began by exploring the primary colours red, blue, and yellow and the children experimented with colour mixing to see what new colours they could create. They loved discovering how colours can change when mixed together, showing great curiosity and creativity.

we even took our Mondrian inspiration outside and created our own pieces of art with chalk using the primary colours and shapes just like he did!

After looking closely at Mondrian’s style, the children created their own final piece inspired by him. They enjoyed arranging shapes, painting blocks of colour, and using lines to separate each section, just like how Mondrian did.

They look magnificent displayed around our classroom and art area!!!

Feel-Good Friday in F2!

What a week it has been for our wonderful F2 children! We have been working incredibly hard so to celebrate the end of a long and busy week we treated ourselves to something cosy and comforting… yummy toast!

With the rain pouring down outside, it felt like the perfect moment to enjoy a warm snack together. The children loved watching the toast slowly turn golden brown, keeping a careful eye on it as it popped up ready to be buttered. They did a brilliant job spreading the butter and jam with so much concentration and careful hands!

And of course, the best part of all… eating it! The toast was delicious and gave everyone a lovely boost of energy for a fun-filled morning of play.

This was just what we needed to finish our week on a high.

Trip to the library

Today we took a short and exciting trip to the school library! For many of our children, it was their first time using the library properly, so we began by talking about the library rules and how to take care of the books. The children listened beautifully and showed fantastic understanding.

Once inside, everyone explored the shelves carefully, choosing books that looked interesting and exciting. It was lovely to see the children sharing stories with each other, turning pages gently, and talking about the pictures they found.

After spending some time reading independently and with friends, we gathered together to enjoy a story as a class. The children were fully engaged and listened brilliantly.

Before leaving, the children did an amazing job tidying the library, returning books to the right places and making sure it looked just as lovely as when we arrived ready for the other children in the school to use.

We really enjoyed the calm atmosphere and will definitely be making regular trips here!
