None of us knew what a binary tree was at the start of our lesson so we were excited to learn.

Next, we started by thinking of yes/no questions to ask about a selection of animals.

Then, we kept answering the questions to create new groups and sort the animals.

Finally, we thought of our own yes/no questions to input on our IPADS.

Computing in Year 2

Year 2 have started a new unit in Computing called ‘Questioning’. This week they were learning to use yes or no question to sort information. On Purple Mash they used yes or no questions to find  the names of the different avatars.

The meaning of S and M for S M A R T

Written by Danny and Kaden

On our second digital leader meeting, we learnt all about what s am=nd m means for the acronym smart. ( s for safety M for meet) we think that it is highly important to follow these rules when on social media or playing games.

S is for safety. Safety is a very important factor when your on the internet. Depending on who your talking to and what information they are asking it it always important to think if it is safe to do so. Although some information (like your password and home address ) is something no matter the cause, don’t mention them to friend online!

M is for Meet. Meeting is a category which is considered in this list because if you and a well known friend that you’ve seen only in social media want to meet up it is important to think if it’s a good idea to see a stranger you know online.

Year 6 D&T

This week, year 6 have been working on D&T (design and technology). For this term, we have made and evaluated some chocolate truffles ( which everyone enjoyed). We were able to create truffles all on our own following our design specification. We were able to use the chocolate of our choice for the base, which we then added unsalted butter, sponge cake and icing sugar to. Everyone loved their different and unique chocolate truffles. We packaged these in our own designed box that we designed using our computing skills on a 3d net. These looked superb!

Sincerely,

The DL Team(Digital Leaders Team)

Internet Safety – Safe and unsafe behaviours

Today in year 6 we have been discussing what behaviours online are safe and unsafe in order to protect ourselves. We discussed how we need to pick appropriate passwords and nicknames online when we are creating accounts. Through our discussions we agreed that if you changed your password regularly then it would be less likely to be hacked into. The children understood that passwords shouldn’t be linked to any personal information as this is personal for a reason and is unsafe to share addresses, schools, date of births etc with people that they don’t know.

Year 6 Computing

Recently in year 6, we have been focusing on using functions and input. We found out how we can use them. We have also been finding out how to use different variables and how much fun they can all create. A variable is a string of a certain combination or the combination can be random.  A function is something that tells the computer to do a certain thing. Input is something that you can tell the computer to do and it might reply depending on if it understands what you are saying and you have got the rest of the code right. Using this information we were able to create a Adventure text program.

Sincerely, DL Team ( Digital Leaders Team)

Beware Malware in Y4

We start our computing lessons by revisiting the SMART rules.

Today in computing, we have been learning about malware, which is designed to gain unauthorised access to our hardware through software, and phishing, when you receive emails from people pretending to be a company.

We had a class discussion about how often we install apps on our phones and tablets without really knowing where they are from and who has made them.

We completed an activity where we all received a fake spam email and had to respond appropriately. Some emails had attachments, some email promised money and some were just strange! We discussed that if something sounds to good to be true or is making huge promises, it is usually a scam and we should report to our teacher!

Y3 Blogging

In Year 3, during our computing sessions on Purple Mash we have been recapping the importance of having a secure password. We were shocked to hear that some adults still have the password ‘password’.

We discussed blogs and what they are and what they are used for. We had a look at the school blog and thought it was great to see all of the things the children have been doing across the school. We noticed that all of the content was positive and all of the teachers and children had written complimentary things about each other.

We had a class discussion about appropriate and inappropriate things that we could write on a blog post and what they could be used for.

‘You should only say kind things about other people on a blog post’ Year 3 child OL

‘You need to be careful not to give out too much information on a blog post as anyone can read it’ Year 3 child E

We then set about making our own class blog where we gave advice to our readers about how to stay safe online. Here are a couple of our blog posts.

Digital footprints in Year 2!

Year 2 have been learning about digital footprints and how important it is to be safe online. We shared our ideas about what we should and could share online and how that information was stored before creating posters to help other children.
