Creating Viking Shields!

We have had a really exciting start to our new topic – ‘Were the Vikings really vicious?’

Today we worked together to design and create authentic-looking Viking shields. We learnt about what they would be made from and how they would be used. The completed shields have now been added to our very own long boat in the pod! Great work!

Diary Entries

Miss Stainton’s class have been working really hard over the past few lessons creating diary entries from a character’s perspective. We have watched the BBC Christmas advert and used it to inspire our work. We have really got the hang of writing in an informal tone. Well done!

Aztec Gods!

We have been exploring the different Aztec gods within our topic lessons and have recently designed our own! We had to think carefully about what their powers would be and how the Aztec people could keep them happy. We then drew pictures and labelled them as we used our imagination to think about their appearance. Super work Miss Stainton’s class!

Trying Aztec food!

We were so excited this afternoon to try out some of the traditional Aztec foods which we have been learning about in our topic lessons! We had already researched what food the Aztecs used to eat and worked hard to design a delicious Aztec inspired menu. Today we got to try these foods and for most of us, it was the first time we had ever tasted them!

This is what we tried:

90% cocoa chocolate

Papaya

Pomegranate

Mango

Avocado

Peppers

We are historians!

Today we loved studying primary and secondary sources of evidence to draw conclusions and inferences about Aztec life. We thought really carefully about what the images could teach us and learnt so much without Miss Stainton having to give us any clues or tell us any information! Brilliant independent learning Year 6.

Defining Vocabulary

We have been working really hard exploring the narrative poem ‘The Highway Man’ over the past week.

Today, we worked in groups using dictionaries and iPads to clarify any advanced vocabulary we were unsure of in the stanzas allocated to our groups. We then moved round in a carousel so that each group leader could feedback to us.

We now have an excellent understanding of the language used in this dramatic and detailed poem! Excellent work Miss Stainton’s class!

Mexican Inspired Music!

We have had lots of fun in Y5/6 learning to sing the Mexican song, ‘La Bamba’. It was very tricky as it is sung in Spanish, but we tried hard and soon picked up the words!

Once we had become confident singing the song, we then looked at the notes and learnt to play it on the glock. We have some brilliant musicians!

Rocket launching!

The year 6 children were given another scientific task yesterday – to launch rockets for Miss Stainton’s Mexican party!

We used what we already knew about chemical reactions and mixed an acid and a base to create carbon dioxide. Using a cork, this built up pressure inside our rockets and the results were amazing! Some of our rockets went as high as the school building!

Fantastic work.

We Are Scientists!

Miss Stainton’s class were given a tricky question today – How could they inflate balloons using only vinegar, baking soda and a water bottle?

They worked within groups to create their own plans and hypothesis. They then put these to the test to see if they worked. The groups were very successful and used their knowledge to create a chemical reaction which produced a gas to inflate the balloons! Well done!

Craft club creations!

Miss Stainton’s craft club have had lots of fun over the past few weeks. So far we have enjoyed making slime, friendship bracelets, autumn finger painting pieces, and oobleck! Things have been getting messy but we have enjoyed every minute!

Watch this space for some Christmas creations starting after half term!
