House Captains!

A huge well done to our new Year 6 house captains for this academic year!

Due to restrictions, the children were unable to complete their paper ballot paper votes however we decided to conduct a virtual voting session instead!

All of the candidates delivered excellent speeches and some of the voting was extremely close.

Year 5/6 Poetry Slam

The children in year 5/6 have really enjoyed the chance to warm up their writing skills and channel their creativity through writing a range of poems for our poetry slam!

They were then faced with the tricky task of memorising and reciting their poem from memory as they performed it to their classmates.

We were extremely proud of how many children overcame their nerves and performed for their peers, well done year 5/6!

Here’s Enes with his winning performance as voted for by his classmates…

Victory Leisure Trip

Wow! What a fantastic day we had visiting Vistory Leisure Caravan factories!

Some of our year 5 and 6 pupils took part in a fantastic real-life learning experience and had the opportunity to witness first-hand how some of the most luxurious caravans in the UK are made! Not only that, but various members of staff were more than happy to share their expertise and chat with the children about their route into this line of work and tips on the children could follow in their footsteps.

It was amazing to step foot inside the huge factory and see how much team work is involved in assembling the caravans

We were particularly amazed by the workmen’s vending machine…No chocolates and drinks in here – just tools and equipment to be dispensed!

It was great to chat to the lead graphic designer whilst he showed the children his high-tech software!

Mary was also keen to chat to the children about her job as an interior designer and how she furnishes and decorates the inside of the caravans.

And finally, the children completed a caravan designing task and shared their plans. The winning group were pleased with their prizes of giant chocolate bars!

Year 6 are continuing to enjoy their journey exploring crime and punishment through the ages and this week it was the turn of the Tudors!

We studied lots of punishment devices and came up with some very interesting predictions about what they would have been used for.

Kristian and Courtney studying the sources of evidence carefully to inform their predictions

The boys were pleased that many of their predictions turned out to be correct

However, none of the year 6s predicted that this item, ‘The Brank’, would be attached to women’s heads as a punishment for gossiping! The sharp metal insert would cause pain inside their mouths if they attempted to speak. Safe to say, our year 6 girls were happy not to have been born in the tudor time period!

History Staff Training

Staff participated in a hands-on training session in which they discussed and explored how the history curriculum can be delivered with a focus on skills. Staff worked in teams to complete various activities and put themselves in the children’s shoes! It sparked lots of different talking points and ideas about how the curriculum can be best delivered to engage, enthuse and inspire our young historians at Christopher Pickering.

Drawing Conclusions from Sources of Evidence

Year 6 really enjoyed their introductory lesson to the new topic ‘Crime and Punishment’. The first focus was Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and they were presented with a range of sources linked to this time period. Working in groups, the children discussed and evaluated what the source of evidence could teach us about crime and punishment. They also discussed how reliable the source of evidence was.

We also really enjoyed using our new giant timeline to visually see the context of the Anglo-Saxon and Viking time period in comparison to other periods within British history.

Here are two examples of some of the fantastic work that the children produced within the lesson:

Viking WOW day!

Year 5/6 had so much fun participating in a full Viking day experience! We set up a trading post and used grain to exchange for goods. Children worked in teams to gather as much grain as possible to see who were the most successful traders at the end of the day.

In order to receive grain, they had to buy Viking tasks to complete and the traders would then buy them back. Excellent teamwork was demonstrated by all and it was a fantastic opportunity to put all of our Viking knowledge to use! Well done!

Safer Internet Day 2018!

Miss Stainton’s class enjoyed participating in a range of safer internet day activities this afternoon. We spent a long time discussing how to use the internet and social media platforms sensibly and safely.

We then finished the afternoon by acting out different situations which could happen when using the internet…there are some fantastic actors and actresses in year 6!

Viking non-chronological reports

We have been working really hard in Y5/6 to gather information about ‘The Vikings’. Last week, we embarked on a Viking QR code hunt challenge and searched the pod for lots of interesting facts. This week, we used those facts to write up a non-chronological report. Our writing skills are really improving! Well done!

Translation

Miss Stainton’s maths class have been working really hard this week completing translation challenges.

We have improved our accuracy and are confident in translating a range of simple and more complex shapes across all 4 quadrants, incorporating our knowledge on co-ordinates too! Excellent work!
