Y56 Girls Qualify for finals!

Tonight was our first girls football game since early 2020! What a fantastic return they had with a thrilling game against a strong Francis Askew team. The girls started strong and quickly went up 1-0. In the final moments our girls were leading 3-2 when FA seized their chance and drew scores level just before the whistle. The girls held their nerves and eventually won on penalties!

Well done girls!

Confident win against Francis Askew

Tonight was our first competitive football game in 580 days! After a long long wait the boys finally got to play for their school and what a fantastic job they did too!

Each player was making his debut in the first away fixture of the 7-aside league to Francis Askew Primary. The boys got off to a flying start with and early goal from Tinashe and a few minutes later he bagged his second. Some strong possession in midfield saw goals follow from Lucas, Jack and finally Kacper. An all round strong performance and great was to kick start the year. Well done boys.

Rainbow Run!

Today was our first whole-school sporting event of the year: Hull Active School’s Virtual Cross Country. This year the theme was rainbows and all children and staff were invited to come in their brightest colours.

Each year group ran as a whole in instances from 1400-400m. Of those who started, everyone completed their run which is fantastic! A huge well done to all.

The times from Y3, 4, 5 & 6 will be send off and compared to the times from other schools and winners announced. We will also have some in-year medals to give out as well.

Y6 ready to start their run!

Year 3 raring to go!

Y4 Egyptian Gods

This week in Y4 we have completed our first piece of artwork linked to the human form. We looked at the different proportions of the body and the importance of correct relationships in size when drawing people. We used a scaling up method to help us enlarge images of Egyptian gods and goddesses.

A successfully scaled and proportioned drawing.

Farai and Sophia midway through the process.

A fantastic piece of work from our star of the day, Leo!

Y4 Performance Poetry!

There’s a rang-tan in my bedroom and I don’t know what to do!”

This week, Y4 have had a fantastic time looking at performance poetry. We started by watching and appraising different performances. We then watched Michael Rosen’s top tips for poetry performance.

Then, we looked at the Green Peace advert featuring the poem “There’s a rang-tan in my bedroom”. This is a moving and very relevant piece as it is themed around deforestation, more specifically destruction for the palm oil industry so links very well with our topic this term. Here’s the original:

We then practiced this poem, considering intonation, pace and expression. Here are some of the results!

Hamdi, Riley, Oliver and Alex.

Grace, Alisha, Maycie and Evie

We then innovated the poem, changing elements so that that there was a rang-tan in our classroom!

Here is a brilliant example:

Y4 Wire Sculptures

After a few weeks working in the 2D with drawing and painting, Y4 were very excited to be working in three dimensions this week. After looking closely at leaves previously, children were tasked with making different leaf sculptures from aluminium mesh.

This was a satisfying material to work with and was very easy to cut and shape into different forms. The finished pieces were mounted to mimic specimens in a museum or scientific collection and look fantastic in our pod!

Maycie-Leigh and Eva working on their sculptures – we may have had a few pricked fingers!

Colour tints, observational drawing and painting

Y4’s art journey continues this week by combining a few skills we have been practicing. Children have been working on there observational skills and have tried different media like pencil and charcoal. They have also used watercolour paints to create different tints of green. They began by mixing shades, tones and tints of green to paint the leaves that they had drawn, applying this colour mixing knowledge, whilst carefully observing the colours within the subject.

Keep up the hard work children, you’re doing great!

Paigton and Lily used their colour tinting skills to paint these leaves.

Y4 Help combat loneliness!

As part of the EFL’s Day of Action, some year 4 children took part in a virtual meeting with the residents of an elderly care-home. They have a great time chatting about each other’s childhoods!

Observational drawings

Pencil or Charcoal?

During our second lesson, taking lead from Rousseau’ observations of plants in the Botanical Garden in Paris, we sketched leaves of a variety of plants, taking note of their shape, lines, shading, patterns and colour. We made careful observational sketches in pencil and then compared that to the effects achieved when sketching with charcoal.

Exploring drawing media: charcoal and pencil

This week, Y4 have been designing and setting up a number of experiments to see how materials change over time. They have been looking at how different materials can melt, freeze, evaporate and condensate. They have made their predictions and have already gathered some results!

What will happen to the water in the uncovered glass? What will happen to ice cubes at room temperature? What will happen to ice in a fridge? Y4 are finding out!

Children also conducted a comparative test to see if the mass of an ice cube affects the time it takes to change state. Most correctly predicted the result!

Grace and Alisha predicted the ice cube with the greatest mass would take longer to become a liquid!
