Scholarship: Basket Ball and Beyond

Over the next couple of weeks, our sports scholarship will be explore games linked to basket ball and really developing their hand-eye coordination and attacking and defending skills across some lesser-known sports.

This week, children played Tschouk ball – a fast-paced sport in which points can be scored at either end of the pitch by bouncing the ball off a special net and landing it in the playing zone. This game requires high levels of skill and quick thinking in oder to get to the upper hand.

Children also played handball. Requiring similar positioning and marking strategies as basketball and netball, children enjoyed this game but had to adapt their scoring and defences strategies.

Well done to everyone for your fantastic effort.

Finding ways to create scoring opportunities can be tricky in Tchoukball.

Sharp defence was the key to winning in handball!

Yesterday, the Women’s Rugby League World Cup began with England playing Brazil. As part of our sports scholarship programme, our girls went to go see the opening game at Headlingley Stadium. The match was an excellent event with a vibrant and exciting atmosphere. The game was fantastic, with England winning 72-4 in a fourteen try thriller. For the majority of our girls, it was their first every time watching live rugby and we all left he ground feeling inspired and buoyed by the growth of women’s sport and the platform it is now receiving.

Thanks for being excellent ambassadors girls, lets keep on supporting England this campaign!

Eager for the game to start!

OAA: ‘Cross the River’ challenge

This week year 4 started their new outdoor and adventurous unit ‘Problem Solving’. This unit builds on from their year 3 unit ‘Communication and Tactics’ and requires children to work together to solve problems.

In this lesson, they had to figure out how to solve cross a ‘river’ using hoops. Each team had the same number of ‘lily pads’ (hoops) as team members and children were only allowed to stand on the lily pads. Could you solve this problem?

Once children had worked out how to solve the problem, we experimented with different equipment which meant the problem had to be solve in a more nuanced way. Well done children!

Giant lily pads required some consideration of where to stand!

Sliding the benches required coordination and communication

Hedgehog stones were very difficult but lots of fun!

Sports Scholarship Dance Workshop

This week out sports scholarship group took part in a dance workshop. Dance instructor Leisel Cobby spent the afternoon working with children to choreograph a dance in response to a piece of modern music. A huge well done to those children who pushed themselves out of their comfort zone and really got stuck into this activity. Video coming soon!

Rehearsing hard for the final performance

A tiring but thoroughly enjoyable afternoon!

Solid start to the seven-aside league!

Tonight, the boys started their defence of the seven-aside league title. Being league holders and Champion Leagues winners, there was pressure on the boys to perform but they beat a determined Francis Askew in all four games.

Well done boys keep up the hard work.

Boys cruise to Humber 7s finals

Tonight out boys attended their HAS seven-aside qualifying event. It was their first games of the year and with some new players in the team, we were unsure of how they would perform. However, they quickly got to grips with their new positions and settled into their games, winning all the them comfortably.

The boys now progress onto the Humberside finals in November. Good luck boys and well done!

Hull Active Schools Inter-school Cross Country

This afternoon, 10 children from Y56 represented CPPS in Hull Active Schools Cross Country  Championships. These children were selected to represent the school due to their finishing times at the intra-house race at school last week.

The conditions this year were the worst I have ever seen it! The rain held back a little for the boys race, but he wind was still howling throughout. The girls race was another level – a huge rain storm descended which soon became hail and sleet. Some girls gave up half way round due to the conditions. However, all of our girls dug deep and reached the finish.

We will have to await the results for the team events but on the day, Y5’s Jack S finished third place and came away with a bronze medal.

Well done to all children – you did amazing in challenging conditions!

Special mention to Vinnie and Archie who braved the storm to help HAS to clear up cones and markers after the races.

Girls get football season underway

Tonight our U11s girls got this year’s football season underway with a seven-aside qualifying event. Five other schools were in attendance which meant the girls got lots of games. Coming up against some very good games, the girls were challenged to improve every game and at a minimum, finish the game with a draw. After losing the first two games, the girls worked hard in the final three and met their target – they were also unlucky to come away without scoring a goal.

Keep up the hard work girls – we’re proud of you determination and sure you will continue to improve.

Intra-School Cross Country

Today was our whole-school Cross Country day! A large course was set up on their field and all children got to represent their house in a cross country run. The top five boys’ and girls’ times will be progressing to the Hull Active Schools XC championships next week. However, today’s challenge was all about personal best and children where given the target of completing the race – this shared target was great motivation and 100% of children who started their race finished it. Of that you should all be very proud! Well done.

A big sprint for the finished in the girls Y56 race

The High Sheriff Visits CPPS!

This afternoon we had a very special visitor in school: Jacky Bowes who is the High Sheriff of the East Riding. The High Sheriff has been spending time with Tigers Trust this week to see firsthand some of the brilliant work they do. She came to CPPS to see the PLPS programme in action and joined in with a Y4 active maths lesson.

Children were working with our partnership coach Will to practise their times tables in a dodgeball type game. Jacky was very impressed and commented on the fantastic attitude of our children. Well done Y4!
