Year 5 have started their D&T unit for the Autumn term: designing and creating their own sandals. Over the past two lessons, the children have explored a range of sandals and analysed the design, material, purpose, audience and functionality. The children then began their focused practical task that involved tracing around their feet on card and cutting the templates out neatly and carefully. They then practiced some key skills that are going to be applied to the final piece, such as pinning, sewing and stitching straps onto their templates.
Year 5 have started their first Talk for Writing unit in English. Our fiction text is called Smaug – a young boy who sets about his mission to defeat Smaug, the infamous dragon. The children have really enjoyed learning the story off by heart using signifiers. Below are some photographs of the children acting the ‘beating the monster’ story.
Some of our Y6 House Captains collecting all of our donations for Children in Need. Our school will be making a difference to the lives of children and young people who really need our help!
Year 5 had an excellent time participating in the Bearpee challenge for Children in Need. Miss Mead even showed the children how it was done… the children definitely scored higher!

This week, Year 5 have been taking part in the Bikeability course! The children have been working extremely hard to improve their cycling skills… the confidence of the children has sky rocketed: they are doing fabulously!
Here are some images of the children being super independent.
Y5’s knowledge and understanding of Anient Greece was put to test in our end of unit Kahoot quiz! A huge well done to our top 3 winners: Danielle placing 3rd, Simon placing 2nd and our winner, Dylan (real life historian!).
In History, year 5 have been learning all about Ancient Greece. Today, we focused on a fearless Macedonian king and military genius, Alexander the Great. The children worked in groups to piece together a timeline of Alexander the Great’s life and important achievements.
We learnt lots of knew sticky knowledge and gathered the causes and consequences to his actions in Ancient Greece.
Year 5 learnt all about the famous scientist, Jane Goodhall. We learnt that she is a British scientist who has studied chimpanzees for many years. She is considered to be the world expert on chimpanzees and their behaviour!
The children then used their research skills, along with the information they learnt, to create a poster all about Jane Goodhall. Here are some of our creations!

On Friday, our school councillors and house captains had an exciting meeting with our local councillor – Councillor Henry. Our children had the opportunity to have their voices heard by the councillor about what they do within Christopher Pickering to support the school. Councillor Henry shared some useful tips about how we can work together with her to incorporate British Values (even more than we already do!) into our school.
After our meeting, our house captains took the pleasure of showing Councillor Henry around our school, gardens and playground. They took ownership and developed leadership with the help of our special visitor!
