Musical Maestros

We in Year 4 have been having a fabulous time learning to play various tunes on the glockenspiel this term.

Following the Charanga music scheme has allowed to become more knowlegable about both the theory and language of music, whilst having fun playing various musical pieces such as ‘DEF-inately’, ‘What’s Up?’ and ‘Strictly D’ to name but a few.

Y4 PSHE – Being Me In My World

In Year 4, we have had lots of interesting discussions and debates on the various topics in our Jigsaw scheme this term.

So far…we have been exploring the concept of inclusion and what it means to belong to our community groups as opposed to being excluded an not involved. It was agreed that being included makes us feel respected, valued and part of a team within all the groups that we belong to.

We have identified the roles of the adults who work within the Christopher Pickering community. After much debate, the children all agreed that all of the adult roles are equally important to ensure that our school functions on a daily basis so that we can be the best we can be.

Exploring the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC 1989) was enlightening for all the children who are now more aware of the rights which they have, as well as to how each of the articles within this important document endeavour to make sure they are safe and cared for.

Further discussions upon the current rewards and consequences utilised within our school community as opposed to those which were used in education establishments in the past, made the children more aware of how the strategies today are more considerate and respectful of their human rights.

World Book Day 2021 – Potato Gallery

For World Book Day, the children in the Year 3 Bubble demonstrated their artistic talents and illustrated their favourite book characters. The children framed their creations and entered their artwork into our Year 3 Potato Gallery.

Advent – Countdown to Christmas

In Year 3, we have been exploring the celebration of Advent and the significance it holds for the Christian community. We shared the ways in which we celebrate our own ‘Countdown to Christmas’ by opening our yummy Advent calendars and compared our traditions to that of lighting the candles on the ‘Advent Wreath’ in a Christian place of worship.

We also explored the significant meaning of each part of the Advent Wreath –

The four outer candles represent Peace, Love, Joy and Hope.
The centre candle represents Jesus – The Light of the World and his birth
The evergreen leaves of the circular wreath symbolise life, hope and eternity.

We hope that everyone has a lovely time this Christmas!

Remembering

In Year 3, we have been sharing some of our special memories and comparing our views on the importance of sharing our memories with others. We established that memories help us to reflect on both our past as well as those of others who are, or have been, an important part of our lives.

We have been able to identify the Christian celebrations which take part throughout our calendar year and recognise the importance of these for members of the Christian community. We were able to talk about the celebrations we like best and discuss how these celebrations make us feel.

We have also discussed the significance of Remembrance Day and the importance of remembering how the events from the past have shaped our lives today.

Comparing Communities

In Year 4 this term, we have been exploring and comparing the rituals and traditions which take place within the Christian and Jewish faith communities. We have explored the traditional celebration of ‘Harvest’ within the Christian community and compared it to the ‘Festival of Sukkot’ celebrated within the Jewish community. From this we concluded that while there are some differences in the way each festival is celebrated, the common theme is to remember and give thanks to others.

We have also explored the common traditions and rituals that we all experience of a weekend in our own lives and compared these to the ritual of ‘Shabbat’ which takes place each week in a Jewish family household. Some children were a bit shocked when Charlie in the clip mentions that he is unable to play on his Playstation/X-box or phone during Shabbat! Upon further discussion, the children gained a further understanding of this weekly ritual and the importance of acknowledging the Jewish day of rest within this faith community.

Anti Bullying Week – United Against Bullying

For Anti-Bullying Week in Y3/4, we have be having ‘in-depth’ discussions, where we have been able to share our opinions and views on how we can all work together to demonstrate a united approach to tackle bullying.

Find Your Brave

In PSHCE today, Y4J have been exploring the concept of bravery for Child Mental Health Week. We shared our opinions of what bravery is considered to be, as well as some of our own stories and experiences of being brave in certain situations. We also explored the bravery of the character ‘Plop’ from Miss Stewart’s favourite book ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark’ and how he himself built up the courage and determination to develop his own bravery.

Year 3 One Minute Maths Challenge

Year 3 had fun undertaking Miss Stewart’s one minute maths challenge. We had a range of activities (write our full names in joined handwriting; write our times tables; make stacks of 10 unifix cubes; star jumps and sharpening pencils) which we had to firstly predict how many of each activity we thought we may complete in 1 minute before undertaking the activity. We established that 1 minute (60 seconds) is not a very long time…however time does fly when you are having fun!!! This activity helped us consolidate our understanding of time as well as assist us in collating data which is our new maths area of learning. We are going to use our results to create bar charts!

Hieroglyphics

We became Egyptian scribes this afternoon whereupon we tried to master the skill of illustrating our names using hieroglyphics, which was an ancient form of Egyptian writing using pictures. Did you know that there were 700 hieroglyphic images that the Egyptian people had to learn so as to be able to read and write?!…that is a lot of characters but an interesting fact to remember!
