Significant Saints

In R.E, Year 4 have been using the I-pads and QR codes to research the four Patron Saints of the United Kingdom. We have identified and compared similar traits and qualities between these significant men (Each were Christians; selfless; brave; kind; loyal etc), as well as the heroic and brave acts they were recognised for.

Shrove Tuesday and Lent

The children in Year 3 have been learning about the Christian concepts of ‘Shrove Tuesday’ and ‘Lent’. We discussed the tradition of using up foods (eg eggs, butter and milk), which were usually given up during the fasting period of Lent. We also learned how Shrove Tuesday is celebrated around the world:

Sweden – Shrove Tuesday is called ‘Fettsdagen’ which translates to Fat Tuesday and small pastries are eaten called ‘Semla’ instead of pancakes!

France – Shrove Tuesday is called ‘Mardi Gras’ which translates to Fat Tuesday and pancakes called ‘crepes’ are eaten!

Portugal – Shrove Tuesday is called ‘Carnaval’ but instead of pancakes small doughnuts are eaten called ‘Malasadas’.

Iceleand – Shrove Tuesday is called ‘Sprengidagur’ which translates to ‘Bursting Day’. However, pancakes are not eaten but instead a dish of salted meats and peas is served!

After completing our work we had our own mini celebration with delicious pancakes – YUM!

Budding Linguists!

In Years 3 and 4 the children have been practising their linguistic skills during mini role play activities. The children confidently met and greeted each other and introduced themselves before finishing with a goodbye!

Bonjour!/Salut! (Hello!/Hi!)
Comment tu t’appelles? (What is your name?)
Je m’appelle … (My name is …)
Et toi? (And you?)
Au revoir!/ A bientot! (Goodbye!/See you soon!)

Collaborative Research

In English, children in Year 4 have been working collaboratively whilst using their computing skills to research important information about one of the significant ambassadors of Hull: Sir Leo Schultz.

We found out that he led a major campaign whilst serving as an MP for Hull at the beginning of WWII to ensure that each household in the city received an Anderson Shelter to keep families safe during air raid attacks. We also discovered that he himself served as an air raid warden throughout the Blitz, for which he later received an OBE from the Queen in recognition of his work both during the war and for his service towards the government!

We will be using our new found knowledge to assist us in writing a formal letter directed to Mr. Schultz and/or the council in relation to the campaign at the time it was led.

Leadership Qualities

In RE, Year 3 have been exploring the concept of leadership and the qualities an individual would require to be considered a good leader. We will be using our knowledge of the leadership qualities we have identified to explore the lives of significant faith founders, such as Jesus, Moses and Buddha so as to compare how effective they were as leaders.

Both Jacob and Archie explained that “A leader has to be good to lead people” whilst Mollie said that “A leader needs to be able to show people what to do and how to behave…like a good role model.”

The images below show the qualities which the children thought were most important to possess as a leader (selfless; kind; strict and serious; caring; have a good sense of humour; tidy; respectful; polite; fair and wise).

Ambassadors of Hull

Recently the children in Year 4 were fortunate enough to visit the KCOM Centre in Hull to attend a learning event courtesy of the Hull Children’s University. We learned lots about the history of Hull before going into the city centre to interview members of the public to ask their opinions both about Hull and the City of Culture event. Later in the day we had a guided tour of our wonderful city to visit some of the iconic landmarks which celebrate some significant and infamous ambassadors of Hull:

Sir Leo Schultz – campaigned for air-raid shelters to be built in Hull during WWII
William Wilberforce – led the campaign to abolish slavery
Charles Henry Wilson – Hull shipowner and MP for Hull West
Philip Larkin – famous poet who adopted Hull as his home city

A great day was had by all, children and staff alike, and we would like to say a big THANK YOU to Julia and everyone else who helped to make the day so special. We not only learned so much about our fantastic city but also saw so much just by taking our time to look around which we so often miss when we are in such a rush.

Salutations! (Introductions)

We wanted to demonstrate our knowledge and understanding of another language by writing a short introduction and description of ourselves in French. Our descriptions tell our name and age, whether we have brothers and/or sisters, what pets we have and what we like to do as well as eat!

Some safety advice from Year 3 are:

Always find a safe place to cross.
Never run across the road – always walk.
Use your Green Cross Code -STOP, LOOK, LISTEN AND THINK!
Never drive when you are tired.
Look where you are going – do not get distracted.
Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.
