Year 5 Enterprise Day at Sirius Academy

Today, 25 Year 5s visited Sirius Academy to take part in an Enterprise Day event.

The children worked collaboratively with children from other schools to create their own Safari Park. They were given a budget of £50,000 to choose a location for their park, buy animals, attractions and facilities for their park and advertise their park. They then had to present their ideas and the best parks received a fantastic prize.

Well done Summer, Evie F and Evie W, who were part of the winning teams!

Anti-Bullying Week

To start Anti-Bullying Week, Year 5 took part in Odd Socks Day to celebrate the fact that we are all different. We then discussed what we could do to spread the message of ‘One Kind Word’ and how it feels when someone is kind to you.

Do Heavier Objects Fall Faster Than Lighter Objects?

This week, in Science, Year 5 have observed whether heavier objects fall faster than lighter objects. We planned and conducted our experiment in groups. We dropped two beanbags that had different masses from the same height. We observed that both beanbags landed at the same time because they have the same amount of gravitational pull acting on them.

Year 5 Bikeability

Year 5 have had a super week taking part in Bikeability. They have learned all about the primary and secondary road positions, how to do a u-turn and how to signal and turn left and right. Well done Year 5!

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day we wore yellow to school and in return we donated money to the charity Young Minds Trust, which helps young people who are struggling with their mental health. In our assembly, we learned about what mental health is, what we can do to improve our mental health and what we should do if we are every feeling sad. Throughout the day, we took part in mindfulness sessions and throughout the week, we will be completing activities based around promoting positive mental health.

School Council

Over the past few days, the children from Years 1-6 have been taking part in electing their new school councillors. The children who were interested in being a school councillor wrote their names down on our sign up sheets then presented a speech to their year group, stating why they would make a super school councillor. The children then voted for the two children they would like to represent their year group at school council meetings.

Our new school councillors are:

Year 1: William O and Dixie-Lee J

Year 2: Hollie J and Grace A-M

Year 3: Rebecca R and Billy B

Year 4: Bailey F and Sophia G

Year 5: Riley Y and Lola F

Year 6: Jenson F, Ella C, Chloe C, Freddie F, Jay H, Gracie E, Phoebe M and Jamie C

The Year 6’s will also be house captains.

Year 5 Geography

This afternoon, Year 5 began studying the Ancient Greeks. To start the topic, we looked at the geographical location of Greece. We started by recapping the names of the oceans and continents, labelling these on a world map and discussing countries that are in each continent. We then zoomed in on Europe, looking at the location of Italy (which we studied in Year 4 when learning about the Romans) and Iceland (which we studied when looking at WWII in Year 4). Next, we located Greece on the map, looking at the countries and seas that border Greece. To finish our lesson, we did some research, looking at the physical features of Greece. We learned that Greece has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and is composed of the mainland and around 6,000 islands!
