Year 5 Sport Afternoon With Sirius Academy

This afternoon, Year 10 students from Sirius Academy came to run a sporting event with our Year 5 pupils. The children were spilt into eight teams who competed against each other in rounders, tag rugby, dodgeball and football. Well done to Alishia, Alfie, Lucas, Ella, Grace and Ryan who were on the winning team. Prizes were given out and the children enjoyed a refreshing drink and snack after their active afternoon. The children had so much fun and even asked if they could do it again next week! A huge thank you to Scarlet, Amber and Yandeh who organised the event – it was fantastic!

Year 5 Jigsaw – Online Gaming

This week in PSHE, Year 5 looked at online gaming and the risks involved with playing games online. We came up with a list of positives and a list of negatives to online gaming. In groups, we were then given a made up online game which he had to create some rules for in order to make the game safer.

VE Day

Today, Year 5 took part in a virtual transition day activity with Sirius Academy. The children started the day with a Team call with teachers from Sirius Academy and were introduced to their task: they were to learn about World War II and VE day and plan a VE day street party. Due to studying World War II in Year 4, the children had an outstanding knowledge about World War II which blew Miss Staines and Miss Callow away! The children then spent the afternoon deciding which foods, refreshments and decorations they would like at their VE day party and who they would like to invite. They then made some fantastic bunting to hang up at their party.

Year 5 Jigsaw – Online Communities

Today, in Jigsaw, Year 5 talked about social media sights and online communities and why people decide to join them. We then looked at some fake online communities and talked about which ones we would like to join and why. Some children said they would like to join a site called #Lolfunnyvids because they like to watch and post funny videos online and some children said they would like to join #Photoswapzzz because they like to chat with their friends by sending photos. The children were then given one of the fake social media sites and worked in groups to answer the following questions: Who would join this site? Why would people choose to join this site? What are the risks of joining this online community? and What responsibilities do members of this site have to make sure it is a safe and happy place?

Year 5 Bike Challenge

Today, Sirius Academy set Year 5 the challenge of keeping an exercise bike running for as long as possible. Throughout the day, we all had a go on the bike and we managed to keep it going for over 4 and a half hours!

Today, in Jigsaw, Year 5 were looking at online safety and the age limits that some apps and online games have.

We started our lesson by completing a quiz about the age limits that different activities (such as driving a car, buying alcohol, getting married, being criminally responsible for your actions and owning a phone) have.

Next, we discussed the potential risks that we could face when going online.

Finally, we discussed the age limits that different apps have. We talked about the pros and cons for apps having age limits and why we think age limits are been put in place.

Year 5 Newspaper Reports

The Year 5 children, both at home and at school, have produced some fantastic newspaper reports based on our guided reading text – Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. They have reported that a young boy, called Michael, has fallen off his family’s yacht while they were sailing around the world and he is now missing. Their reports were brilliant and included all of our Year. 5 grammatical features, including relative clauses, parenthesis and modal verbs.
