Chocolate Fair Apples!

This afternoon in HUB1 we made our very own fairground chocolate apples, in celebration of Hull Fair week!

The children loved chocolate tasting and watching what happens to the chocolate when it heats in the microwave. We loved stirring the chocolate and exploring it’s texture once it had melted! The children had a go at independently dunking their apples and dipping in sprinkles to create the perfect yummy chocolate apples!

This was a great opportunity for engaging in a sensory activity, listening to the sounds of the microwave and sprinkles and smelling the scrumptious chocolate! It was also a great opportunity for language development and turn-taking, sharing and helping others!

We can’t wait to take them home tonight to have a go at tasting our delicious apples!

Autumn Maths Exploration!

This morning in HUB1 we explored numbers to 10 and 20 working on our number recognition and counting out amounts. We enjoyed exploring autumnal counting objects and counting out amounts matching them to the correct numeral!

We all concentrated on this activity for a prolonged period and enjoyed the outcome!

Getting messy!!!

This week in Hub 1 we have done lots of ‘getting messy activities‘ to encourage our fine and gross motor skills! From painting activities, muddy play, shaving foam squeezing and pumpkin discovering… we have been given lots of opportunities to get our hands moving and really get  stuck in with some sensory exploration! Messy play is an extremely important part of our learning and development, enhancing those early sensory exploration skills, alongside fostering creativity and problem solving, promoting emotional regulation and encouraging and supporting language development!

These experiences have led to lots of open ended communication opportunities and encouraging the use of vocabulary and expressing needs and wants! The children have loved joining in with all these activities and had a wonderful afternoon welcoming some parents in to join us in our ‘stay and play session on Monday afternoon!

Crafts in the cabin…

The children in Hub 1 had a wonderful afternoon exploring our new cabin space and the beautiful garden area outside!

We had great fun getting messy in the mud kitchen, mixing potions with sticks and listening to the wind blow and rustling through the trees! A lovely calm afternoon outside in the fresh air connecting with nature and providing an opportunity for some great balancing skills on the logs!

Inside the cabin we enjoyed making some paper faces and decorating them with eyes, ears, nose, mouth and hair, exploring different faces as part of our ‘Magical Me’ topic! A great opportunity for some fine motor skill practice and lots of vocabulary and communication/ talking points!

Wassily Kandinsky!

This week F2 have enjoyed learning all about the famous Russian artist…

‘Wassily Kandinsky’

…and have used his work to inspire some of their own fabulous pieces of art!

We have learnt lots about Wassily himself and have enjoyed exploring some of his most famous pieces, looking at the shapes he used and the colours!

We explored how different colours make us feel and how we can mix colours together to create new ones, talking about the primary colours and their importance!

Here are a few pictures of the children getting inspired and busy with their intrinsic circle designs, carefully mixing their own colours and creating beautiful abstract art!!!

F2 Stay and Play!

F2 had a lovely afternoon showing off their fabulous classroom in our stay and play session!

The children always enjoy these opportunities to share their classroom with their families so thank you to everyone who joined us!

The sun was shining and it was a glorious afternoon spent crafting, drawing, exploring and having lots of fun together!

We hope you enjoyed it as much as us! Here’s a few snaps from the session 🙂

Ground Force!

Foundation Stage and Eco Club have been busy cleaning, litter picking, weeding and planting this week in the F2 garden!

Maintaining the school grounds is hard work and is a never ending job! So it helps when there’s team work involved!

The children have loved exploring the plants already growing in the garden, particularly smelling the mint! And have some big plans and ideas for the future!

Here’s a few snaps of us getting our hands dirty this week…

Making Bread!

Can you guess what story we have been reading this week from the clues below?

The Little Red Hen!

We have loved reading this story together in class this week and have had lots of lengthy discussions about sharing and helping each other! We have chatted about animals you might see on a farm and the different jobs that might happen there.

The story led us to lots of discussions and talk about bread...if we like it, what we like on it and where it comes from!

We realised that it doesn’t start in the local shops but that it is made and comes from a crop called wheat…which is farmed!!!

We had lots of fun watching the process of harvesting and collecting wheat and how this is ground to make flour in a mill.

We then had a go at using flour to make our very own bread, which was lots of fun, and messy too! We stirred, poured and needed to make the perfect dough ready for cooking in the oven and eating with some home-made butter! The children enjoyed this part!

Trip Trapping…

The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff!

What a fabulous morning F2 had bringing their traditional tale to life!!!

We have been learning the story of ‘The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff’ the past few weeks and learning how to retell the story using our story signifiers and props!

Today we performed the story to each other, dressing up and acting out the main events and problems that occur.

WE loved seeing Mrs Buss dress up as a troll and trying to cross the bridge to the sweet green grass! This inspired us to act out the story on our own in groups outside, using traditional tale and story language! We had some great troll voices and impressions and enjoyed making sturdy bridges to safely guide the goats across!

This activity allowed the children opportunities to play and act out their literacy, developing oracy and language skills. It allowed children opportunities for modelling language, turn taking, sharing and building confidence…

We love the photos below capturing that fun, love, excitement and love for learning and reading!

It’s snowing blossom!

What a wonderful morning F2 have had outside in our garden this morning!

Summer is nearly upon us as the weather has been glorious and the sunshine is beaming! We have noticed other signs of Summer as the flowers start to fully bloom and the trees become greener… we have loved observing and talking about the changes occurring in our F2 garden!

Today in the gentle wind it started to snow blossom as the pink petals floated and fell from the tree, we loved collecting the petals and counting how many we could spot!

We drew some amazing blossom trees using chalk exploring the colour pink and the different shades!
