Book Sale

Our Christopher Pickering Book Sale was a huge success! We will be holding another one very soon!

A special thanks goes to the school council for voting for the books sale, helping to organise it and run it!

All proceeds will be put towards playground equipment for the whole school, as voted for by our school council!

We had a look at a range of maps of our local area. As a class, we looked at Digimaps and found where Hull is in the UK, and where our school and local area is in Hull. We then wrote a set of directions from our school, around our local area and back again, our using our knowledge of the compass points.

We then went for a walk around our local area, following our directions. We added landmarks, signs and buildings to our maps.

When we arrived back at school, we improved our set of directions by adding extra details, such as landmarks we went by and street names and signs.

PSHE Jigsaw Year 2 – Keeping Secrets

Today children learned what a secret is. We played ‘Whisper or Mime’

We discussed ‘good’ secrets, like birthday presents and nice surprises, and ‘worry’ secrets – secrets that may make you feel sad, confused or nervous.

We discussed the importance of telling somebody if we had a secret that we didn’t feel comfortable keeping.

We thought about who we would tell our ‘worry’ secret to.

Year 2 Wow Day!

For our Year 2 Summer Wow Day, children looked at photos of the Titanic. They then carefully sketched the outline of the Titanic and shaded it in using pencil.

After that, children looked at pieces of art work of the Titanic. We focussed on the beautiful sunsets and black silhouettes on different pieces of art, They then created their own backgrounds using oil pastels.

Then, the children drew the outline of the Titanic on paper and filled it in using black or grey oil pastels to create the silhouette of the ship. They cut these out and stuck them onto their backgrounds. They were extremely pleased with the outcome of their pieces of art.

Science Week – Year 2

On Monday, we invited our parents and adults in to work with us whilst we completed our Science investigation!

We are working on Materials and their Properties – and we wanted to test if the shape of a paper bridge affected how much weight it could hold.

First we made a prediction and planned how we would fold and make our paper bridges. Lots of us predicted that the thicker the bridge, the more weight the bridge would hold.

We then tested our bridges with the weight of pennies. If the bridge collapsed when holding only a few pennies, then it wasn’t strong enough.

We had such a lovely afternoon working with our adults and discussing our methods and conclusions.

Year 2 children are looking at materials and their uses.

Today we investigated which material would be the best at blocking out the light.

We made a prediction then used a torch to shine through each material. We used the words ‘opaque’ and ‘transparent’ to compare the different materials.

We found the the black paper was opaque and the plastic lid was the most transparent.

Year 2 looked at extracts from Samuel Pepys’s diary.

They looked at his writing about ‘The Great Fire of London’ and thought about what he must have felt at that time.

Children then looked at the interned to research Samuel Pepys further.

They worked extremely hard to create a fact filr for Samuel Pepys. They found his life very interesting and couldn’t believe that he buried his expensive wine and cheese in his garden!

Year 2 have been looking at famous people and what they are committed to.

They looked at Mo Farrah, Greta Thunberg, Sir Tom Moore and Marcus Rashford and discussed what they were committed to. What did they want to improve? What did they believe in?

Children then thought about what our school could be committed to. What is important to work on to make our school be the best place it can be?

Children worked in teams to think of some fantastic ideas.

Mental Health Week

In Year 2, children coloured in a paper person to represent themselves and their individuality..

Children then sat with a person who they don’t usually sit with in the classroom.

Their challenge was to find out what similarities and differences they had with that person.

They listened carefully to each other and were fantastic at taking turns to speak.

Children then fed back to the rest of the class.
