Anti-Bullying Ambassador Training

Earlier this week, Miss Staines took 10 Year 3/4/5 children to Hull Collegiate School to be trained as Anti-Bullying Ambassadors. Throughout the day, the children learned about the different types of bullying, ways in which to combat bullying and methods for raising the self-esteem and confidence of their peers. The children were outstanding representatives for the school and have already come up with numerous, fantastic ideas and initiatives to help educate other students about the effects of bullying and to make Christopher Pickering a happier and safer place.

Art and Design with the Children’s University!

Today, Year 1 had a fantastic time  working in teams to create kites as part of their creative session with The Children’s University.

First, we used scraps of material, glue, sellotape and paper to create a kite.

We worked in teams and helped each other. Here are some of our fantastic results!

There was a prize for the top team who worked amazingly and created a super kite!

As a special treat we were also shown a Chinese New Year dragon costume and we got to have a go.

We had a great morning being creative!

Year 5 Bikeability

Year 5 have had a fantastic week with the Bikeability instructors. We’ve had such a wonderful range of achievements and successes, from learning how to ride a bike from scratch, to riding on the road for the first time and even being able to turn right into a side street whilst altering road position and signalling. It has been amazing to see all of the children’s positive attitudes, resilience and new-found confidence in their cycling. Well done Year 5! Miss Jones and Miss Staines are so proud of you!

Coding Success

The children in Miss Jones’ class have enjoyed their coding lessons using Purple Mash. They’ve been learning how to write their own code and have been spotting problems and errors in code and correcting these.

History Staff Training

Staff participated in a hands-on training session in which they discussed and explored how the history curriculum can be delivered with a focus on skills. Staff worked in teams to complete various activities and put themselves in the children’s shoes! It sparked lots of different talking points and ideas about how the curriculum can be best delivered to engage, enthuse and inspire our young historians at Christopher Pickering.

Drawing Conclusions from Sources of Evidence

Year 6 really enjoyed their introductory lesson to the new topic ‘Crime and Punishment’. The first focus was Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and they were presented with a range of sources linked to this time period. Working in groups, the children discussed and evaluated what the source of evidence could teach us about crime and punishment. They also discussed how reliable the source of evidence was.

We also really enjoyed using our new giant timeline to visually see the context of the Anglo-Saxon and Viking time period in comparison to other periods within British history.

Here are two examples of some of the fantastic work that the children produced within the lesson:

Romans invade Year Four

In year four we wanted to know how our lives changed from living as Iron Age Celts to being invaded by the Romans!

Using sources of evidence, we explored the attempted  invasions to discover which were /were not successful and why. We enjoyed reenacting the invasions in a class Celts V’s Romans battle!

Discussing sources of evidence to order events.

Teams label their evidence based upon what they know.

We worked together to order the events.

Everyday Objects and Materials

in science this term we are studying materials. Today we walked around the school grounds to identify everyday objects and what materials they are made from.
Our investigation showed that in the school grounds we have many different materials everywhere such as metal fences, wooden benches, rubber tyres and glass windows.
We discussed why each object was made from the material it was made from.
