PHSE Curriculum Enhancements

At Christopher Pickering, our aim is to teach children how to navigate through life safely, happily and healthily. Children are growing up in a world that is constantly changing and it is the duty of all the staff at school in partnership with the parents teach the children transferable life skills. We teach children about the world around them, relationships, emotions, reproduction and health, as well as transferable skills to help with life. Through our PSHE curriculum and abundance of enhancements, children are taught these skills in a way in which they learn and remember.

World Mental Health Day 2022-2023

Mental health is a universal human right‘.

Last year children wore something yellow for school so that we could raise awareness of mental health issues that are unfortunately so common today. Over the course of the day all classes had a slot to work with our mindfulness coach, Lisel, to practice ways of keeping our minds happy and stress free. We had a special assembly and all did some work in classes.

We raised £141 for the charity Young Minds

Anti-Bullying Week 13th-17th November 2023

Theme: Make a Noise about Bullying!

This year we will have a range of activities planned throughout the week in order to raise awareness. Activities to mark the theme alongside work done through Project Evolve on online-bullying.

Last year, the theme for anti-bullying week was ‘Reach out’. Children throughout the school worked on how to do something positive and counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes. Year 2 have been celebrating anti-bullying week this week. They looked at the key message ‘One Kind Word’. Finally they made their anti-bullying pledges.

13th November 2023 – Odd Socks day (as part of Anti-Bullying week)

Children need to come to school wearing odd socks – the brighter the better!

Last year for odd socks day, children worked on activities to highlight that it is OK to be different. Odd Socks Day celebrates that we are unique and marks the start of Anti-Bullying Week and this year it’s taking place on Monday 14th November so we are asking children to come to school wearing odd socks! Look at some of the photographs from previous years.

Road Safety Week 2023 – 19th – 25th November 2023

This year we will be raising awareness of how to be safe crossing and around roads in our community.

White Ribbon Day – 27th November 2023

The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement of men and boys working to end male violence against women and girls. Within our RSE curriculum we look at positive family relationships and the characteristics of a healthy family life, even in times of difficulty.

We are acknowledging White Ribbon Day this year to once again raise awareness of healthy and positive relationships between each other.

Last year we participated in many activities around the school and intent to do the same this year.

In Y4, the children have been working collaboratively to identify the qualities which they believe are necessary to form and maintain positive relationships.

As part of our White Ribbon Day Activity Year 6 Have created a graffiti wall of positivity. Each child wrote a thought on the wall, which challenge misconceptions. The children’s thoughts are clear; each one sending a positive message to all who read them.

‘Together Stronger’ – a message to our children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID pandemic (which seems so long ago) we made a video for all of our children and their families at this difficult time and sent out this message.

‘Endless thanks to parents who are key workers, supporting the country on the frontline. We cannot wait to welcome you all back. Until then, please stay safe and stay at home’.
