At Christopher Pickering, we believe that enhancing our subjects is essential to further children’s understanding and passion for particular disciplines. We organise trips, host extra curricular clubs and often invite visitors in the help embed the children’s understanding and to bring learning to life.
Throughout the year we organise themed days/weeks to further develop the opportunities we give our pupils and regularly invite parents in to share and celebrate the achievements of the school.
History Enrichment Events
Black History Month – October
Black History Month is an opportunity to ensure that all young people, no matter their background, learn about Black history, the achievements of Black individuals, Black Britons and their contributions to British society.
At Christopher Pickering, we have written a bespoke, diverse curriculum that aims to represent individuals from many cultures within all subject disciplines across the school year.
This year during black history month, many activities were taking place around the school to celebrate.
- In EYFS children learned about Ray Charles and listened to his music. We talked about how life wasn’t fair for black people when he was first singing his songs.
- We read a story about a lady called Rosa Parks who worked really hard to make life equal for black people.
Remembrance Day – Thursday 11th November 2021
on Remembrance Day 2021 we received our certificate from The Royal British Legion in Willerby as we are now an affiliated school of the British Legion. We were proud to welcome our visitors and we all took part in the minutes silence to remember our brave, fallen heroes who lost their lives to protect us.
Across the school we all remembered how brave the soldiers were and the significance of the poppy.

VE Day celebrations
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE day in 2020, children at home were asked to complete some activities relating to this whilst the children of key workers at school found out why we celebrate this day and what is significant about it.
Educational Fieldwork Visits
Year 1 – Summer Term
Bridlington
When visiting Bridlington, children will be using photographs from the past to compare certain parts of Bridlington to today, they will identify any similarities and differences and describe what has changed. Using their knowledge of what people used to do on holidays in the past, children will check to see if there is still any evidence of us doing the same things, for example; Punch and Judy shows, fish and chips and donkey rides. They will also be looking for any new things and explaining changes over time.
