Over the past three weeks, Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed their mindfulness sessions in PE. They have learned techniques for calming themselves down when they’re feeling frustrated or angry and exercises that they can do in the morning to prepare themselves for the day.
As part of Global Enterprise Week, Year 5 became mini businessmen and women and created their own safari parks. They were given a budget of £50,000 to purchase a location, animals, facilities and attractions for their parks and a further £3,000 to spend on advertising for their parks. The children worked brilliantly in their teams and some children even displayed some outstanding leadership skills.
Once the children purchased everything for their parks, they created a map of their park and created posters, flyers and logos to advertise them. The finished designs were amazing!
Years 5 and 6 kicked off Anti-Bullying Week by taking part in Odd Socks Day. We wore odd socks to celebrate the fact that we are all different and unique in our own special way.
Throughout the week, Years 5 and 6 took part in PSHE lessons centred around anti-bullying.
Year 5 discussed different types of bullying, the different roles people can play in bullying and what we can do to help combat bullying.
Year 6 talked about how being different could affect someone’s life and discussed their own attitudes towards people who are different.
Year 6 have really enjoyed learning how light enables them to see. They experimented on how distance affects your vision and realised the further away you went the blurrier things became (generally). They also created an entertainment show explaining how light travels and how it enables you to see. They really enjoyed performing these to each other in the class.
Year 6 have been working extremely hard over the past 2 weeks studying hexapods (creatures who inhabit the planet Pandora). They have become experts within this sci-fi genre and have really developed their technical vocabulary and terminology. As their final pieces, each child chose a hexapod to focus on and wrote up a detailed non-chronological reports about them.
We are very proud of the work they have produced and are now eager to get started on writing our fictional stories which are also going to be set on Pandora!
Year 6 have had a super time enhancing their coding through adding variables and functions to make their characters interact with each other. By using the repeat code they have been able to have repeated lines of code which can reset their characters.
Year 6 have been busy this week planning their non chronological reports on a ‘Pandorian’ creature that they have created. They have been inspired through a short sci-fi video showing the alien planet Pandora. From this they’ve created their own beast that would reside there. There has been a lot of intriguing imagination poured into these beasts and we can’t wait to see the final outcomes!
Year 6 had a super time this afternoon during their Mayan trading post. The children were able to trade like Mayans using beans instead of money. They explored the Mayan number system and found information on the temple Chechen Itza. Some children were able to plot the cities and their locations on a coordinates sheet whilst others were able to find out about the Mayan Gods. Lots of children enjoyed earning their ‘money’ through the amazing designs of ceramics which were filled with Mayan glyphs. 
Year 6 had so much fun exploring and expanding their knowledge using print work today. They created etchings of Mayan glyphs and were able to transfer the prints into their sketch books. They examined a range of glyphs carefully and then replicated these with great detail. Excellent work year 6!
