Year 5 Newspaper Reports

The Year 5 children, both at home and at school, have produced some fantastic newspaper reports based on our guided reading text – Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. They have reported that a young boy, called Michael, has fallen off his family’s yacht while they were sailing around the world and he is now missing. Their reports were brilliant and included all of our Year. 5 grammatical features, including relative clauses, parenthesis and modal verbs.

For their final task, they discussed a range of activities and actions that people can undertake online and decided how risky these actions and activities are and why.

Crime and Punishment!

Year 6 have got off to a great start this half term with their topic ‘Crime and Punishment’. We have loved looking back at how life would have been very different during the Anglo-Saxon and Viking period, and started to explore what life during the Tudor times would have been like this week. We learned it was classed as a crime to be homeless and the Tudor vagrants would often be whipped, or even sentenced to death, if they were found on the streets!

In this lesson, we studied a woodcutting primary source of evidence which illustrated a Tudor village scene with a vagrant being whipped and lead through the streets on a leash. We then made reasonable judgements and used our inference skills to explore what we could see happening in the woodcutting.

Year 5 PSHE and Child Mental Health Week

Throughout the week, the Year 5 children – both at home and at school – have been completing a range of PSHE activities.

The children started the week by thinking about their dreams and goals for their futures and then completed dream clouds on which they wrote about what they would like their lives to be lie when they are older.

The children then thought about what their dream job would be. They researched their jobs and came up with three steps they would need to take in order to achieve their dream career.

Next, the children discussed different professions and their salaries. We talked about which professions earned the most money and whether we thought other professions should earn more money because of their contributions to society. Look at these incredible written answers from Cody and Oliver.

Finally, the children completed various activities for Child Mental Health Week. Some children sent in images of themselves expressing themselves in different ways and doing things that they enjoy and some children created jars containing things that they are looking forward to.

Ruby L enjoys colouring and does this to expresses herself .

Ella C enjoys doing anything related to Harry Potter, whether it is reading the books, watching the films or playing Harry Potter board games.

Chloe C, Gracie OE, Gracie J and Oliver E have plenty to look forward to!

PSHE Year 6

As part of Mental Health Week Year 6 have been expressing their thoughts and feelings through art.

In an ideal world, emotions create feelings that flow naturally. But often they get dammed up. Whatever you’re feeling these days, it can be a lot to carry. Expressing emotion through art is an incredible way to release those feelings before they get too deep and begin to create other problems.

Each child has produced a piece of work which reflects their uniqueness and individuality.

We think you will agree we have some very talented children in Year 6 !!!

Year 6 Science – Electricity

Year 6 have loved learning all about electricity in science this half term!

We began the unit by looking at everyday life before electricity. The children had some quite interesting ideas as to what they thought items from the past were used for, before electrical items were even dreamed of.

Next, we learned about the discoveries of Michael Faraday, who invented the electric motor, and how his invention dramatically changed the world.

We looked at different electrical components and what their function is before looking at their corresponding symbols and using these to draw circuit diagrams.

We really enjoyed working scientifically to investigate circuits and predict what would happen if any of the components were changed.

Cyber-Bullying

By Ava-May and Pippa

In one of our digital leaders meetings we looked at Cyber-Bullying, this is a serious thing to do online. It is where someone bullies someone else online. If you for some unacceptable reason, you need to think about how you would feel if you were cyber-bullied as you could have the same feelings as someone else being cyber-bullied. Say if you posted a picture of yourself on social media and you got cyber-bullied for the way you look, it could make you feel insecure about your features and the way you look. If someone is bullying you online, no matter what reason for, then tell a trusted adult and keep the evidence.

If someone was bullying you on a game, don’t hesitate to report them, it could help a lot as they might not just be targeting you. If you were being bullied online, don’t just let them bully you, stand up for yourself. I they don’t leave you alone after that, then tell someone around, whether it is someone you know or not, if they are a trusted adult then they will probably be able to give more advise than anyone else on how to stop them from bullying you. If you are on a game and someone randomly starts cyber-bullying you and there isn’t a report button then maybe figure out the game developers email and tell them that they are bullying you and maybe ask them to ban the person who is bullying you. If they are making you feel upset about what they are saying or worried that maybe it could be happening to someone you know personally or online, then there are lots of people who can help you. Such people are: your teacher, parents, carers or call a ChildLine. Childline will listen to what you have to say and help you. Even if it isn’t repetitive cyber-bullying, it is still not nice to experience or do. So, in that case, stay safe online.

Continuity and Change in the Olympic Games

Year 5 concluded their work on the Ancient Greeks by creating some fantastic double page spreads about the Olympics. We looked at the Ancient Olympics and the Modern Olympics and discussed what had continued and what had changed over time.

Year 5 DT – Making a Pair of Sandals

Over the past week, all the children in Year 5 have investigated, designed, made and evaluated their own pair of sandals. We cut our soles from cork material and used a variety of techniques to attach our straps to our soles and decorate our sandals.

The History of the Olympics

As part of their Ancient Greek topic, Year 5 have been investigating the Olympics and how it has evolved since the games began in Olympia. They worked as a team to put key events relating to the Olympics in chronological order, in a timeline. They then looked at each event in detail, looked at the ancient and modern Olympics and discussed how the games have changed throughout time.
