This weeks Blog is brought to you by Olivia Cowles.

Hello and welcome to my blog.

What our pod is about

This term our pod has turned into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory. It’s so cool.

English

In English we have been learning about Charlie and the Chocolate factory, we have read the book and learned about the Grandparents. We have been using adjectives, noun phrases and adjectives to describe people. Today we invented our own funny Oompa Loompas ready for the new chapter of the book that we are going to write.

Guided reading

In guided reading we are answering questions about Charlie and the chocolate Factory. Today we wrote a letter to Willy Wonka from Prince Pondicherry to thank him for the chocolate palace that he built. It made us all feel very hungry!

RE

In RE we are learning about memories and remembering using a memory box, a scrap book or a diary. We are all bringing items in to talk about with Miss Stewart and put in our year group memory box.

Science – Sound

We have been learning about sound and vibrations. Sound is made by a vibration, the bigger the vibration the louder the sound. The sound travels in waves, it hits your eardrum and it travels all the way through your inner ear and it sends messages to you brain. A few days ago we filmed a ourselves presenting a program about sound and Mrs Hebden thought it was great because we used the science vocabulary.

Today we were scientists and we investigated how sound travels, we used paper cup telephones to find out if the longest, medium or shortest string was the loudest. This was really good fun and we discovered that the shortest string was the loudest phone because the sound waves didn’t have to travel as far. Issac said “Its like a car that runs our of petrol when it gets far away.”

I hope you liked reading my blog 🙂

Identifying different types of angles

Miss Stainton’s maths class have been busy working collaboratively to identify different types of angles. We have been using the vocabulary ‘obtuse, acute, and right angles’ when describing them. All of the angles were linked to rainforest plants which also helped our topic knowledge!

Rainforest Shape Hunt

Miss Stainton’s maths class have been very busy this week learning about the properties of a wide range of 2d shapes. Today they had to solve some rainforest animal riddles to reveal the hidden shapes the animals were hiding! There was some excellent team work going on as the children ventured around the pod working in pairs.

Rainforest Artwork

Miss Stainton’s class have been working really hard on their drawing, cutting, and sticking skills recently! We have been inspired by our new topic ‘Rainforests’ and have drawn some fantastic artwork. We also studied the fascinating ‘Morpho butterfly’ and created our own models of them. We definitely have some excellent artists in year 3!

Learning to tell the time!

Miss Stainton’s maths class have been working hard over the past few days learning how to tell the time. Today they were given pretend watches to wear and they had to ask all of their classmates to show them their watches. They then had to work out what time it said and write it down on their sheets. The children worked so hard to try complete their sheets so that they had everyone’s times written down, excellent work year 3!

Rights and Responsibilities

Children from the Christopher Pickering School Council were privileged to attend Ganton Academy to work alongside the students in Venus class. Work was undertaken on the ‘UN Convention of the Rights of a Child’ whereby the children identified and discussed some of the articles held within the charter. We also undertook some role play activities where we collaborated and acted out significant articles for other groups of children to identify. The children then conducted a QR code hunt using I-pads to match the article numbers to relevant information given. A super morning was had by all, children and staff alike!!! Thank you Venus class!!!

Rainforest Fact Files

Miss Stainton’s class really enjoyed immersing themselves in their rainforest themed pod this afternoon as they worked hard to carry out independent research on their topic. They were given some key questions to investigate and worked in pairs to research these using the iPads whilst also exploring what could be found in the pod! Some children even got into character by dressing up as rainforest explorers! Super work year 3.

Year 3 Pen Pals!

Miss Stainton’s English class have been working extremely hard learning about formal and informal letter writing.

We have been in touch with a Catholic primary school in Cheshire and have all been given a pen pal to write to! This gives us a chance to demonstrate and practise our letter writing skills. Yesterday we drafted our letters and thought of some interesting facts and questions to include them, and today we wrote them up ready for Miss Stainton to post!

We can’t wait for our replies!

Blitz QR code hunt!

Miss Stainton’s class really enjoyed their afternoon in the pod hunting for QR codes! They were given a Blitz quiz and had to search for the answers using the scanner on the iPads. Lots of excellent teamwork skills were being demonstrated as they worked in pairs and they found out some really interesting things about how Hull was affected during this time period in History!
