Year 1 – ICT

This term Year 1 were introduced to the Bee-Bots.

Bee-Bots are robots that need commands to make them move.

We spent time linking outcomes to each button.

The commands we learnt were:- forwards, backwards, turn, clear and go.

Now there children are familiar with the commands, they have been able to program the Bee-Bots to get to a finish point.

Today we ended the Autumn term with our first ever Santa Run – and what fun it was! Thank you so much to parents who made a fantastic effort to dress up along with children and run the course around our school field. The funds we raised will be put to good use for new outdoor equipment. Merry Christmas!

Nativity

Wow… what a performance.

The children did so well learning the songs, saying their lines and performing in front of the school and their families. We are so proud of each and every one of them for their hard work. It is quite tricky remember all the song words, where to go on the stage and all the while smiling and being the best angel or tree or hailstone!

A huge WELL DONE too all the children who took part in Foundation stage 2 and Year 1.

Here are a few photos of some of the the superstars.

White Ribbon Day

On Monday, Year One were introduced to the meaning behind White Ribbon Day.

We had a special assembly to remind the children of the importance of having kind hands, kind feet and to speak to a trusted person if they are ever worried.

The children then signed a White Ribbon Promise which we have displayed proudly on our classroom doors.

After learning about the importance of kindness and maintaining healthy
relationships, the children shared examples of kind actions they have experienced or done.

Matilda said “sharing toys”

Alayah said ” saying kind things to your friends”

Theodore said “kind hands”

We asked the children to write or draw one of these kind actions on a strip of paper and then connect them together, creating a kindness chain. The children loved it!

An autumn walk around Pickering Park!

Over this half term, in both science and geography, the children have been exploring the changes in the weather and the seasons. As the months have creeped from September to November, the children have noticed the weather begin to change and the trees around them begin to adapt, preparing for the colder months!

Year 1 had a fantastic afternoon at Pickering Park looking for signs of Autumn and exploring the great outdoors! We had a look around the park at all of the different animals and tree/leaf species we could see and identify! We talked about different types of trees and the size of different leaves. We then took our learning back to school by filling our outdoor area  with all of the goodies we had collected on the way!

Year 1 – RE

This week we have been looking at promises.

First, we learned that a promise is an agreement to do or not do something.

The children spoke about some promises they had made. Some said they had made ‘pinkie promises’ to their friends, we also discussed school and home promises.

Then we listened to the tale of Abraham and Sarah which is a story from the bible. It tells of how God made Abraham a promise. He promised to give Sarah and Abraham a child and many descendants if they moved from where they were living to a new land. They did, and they had a son called Isaac.

God kept his promise to them, proving he was dependable and faithful.

Finally, the children made their own promise vouchers.

Myles promised to always love his family.

Isla-Grey promised to never hurt anyone.

Keigha promised to never jump on her Dad’s bed.

Forrest promised to always be kind.

Luna said that if promises are broken, there would be consequences, like having time-out or no tablet time, and Matilda said that people would also feel sad if you broke your promise to them.

All the children thought carefully about their promises and they understood the importance of keeping them. They were excited to take them home to share with their families.

Year 1 – RE

Year 1 have been thinking about “how values provide rules for living”… but first we needed to find out what values actually were.

“Values are group of things that are important – such as honesty, good manners, kindness, determination.”

Many values come from holy books, like – the Bible which is a sacred text.

We looked at 10 Commandments last week and this week we listened to the story of The Good Samaritan, which is a story from the Bible.

The children were shocked that people just walked by the injured man, and that the good Samaritan (although he had different beliefs) was the only one to help.

We discussed hat we would do and how we would always help others when needed, it is important to remember that although we may have different beliefs and different gods, places of worship and bibles – we should be kind to everyone regardless of this.

Year 1 -ICT

This week our focus was about using computers safely in our school setting.

First, we looked at why we have rules in school and how those rules help us.

After some discussion, we found at that rules enable us:-

To stay safe

To make sure we are all happy

So that we can learn

To help us to be good people

Next, we looked at how we can apply this understanding to rules needed for using computer technology safely. Our 4 main rules in Year 1 are:-

Hold your device carefully

Stop using your device when someone is talking to you

Take turns with your partner

Only use the apps you’ve been asked to use

Finally, we recapped on all we had learned during our technology lessons.

We know that technology is something that has been made to help others, that we have different types of computer technology, that we can name the different parts of computers and that we have used a mouse and keyboard to draw pictures and write words.

Today Year 1 were identifying and describing the life, works and impact on the world that Sir David Attenborough has had.

We found out that he is a broadcaster and natural historian. Lots of the children had recognised his name before. We learnt that he worked for the BBC presenting lots of programmes about animals and nature.

I asked if any of the children had heard of blue planet which is one of Attenborough’s many nature programmes.

“my grandad always puts that on at his house!” – Myles

We read a story all about Sir David Attenborough’s life and found out that he has many animals and species named after him! We thought this was very interesting. Additionally, we watched some clips of his work and loved learning about how he cares for and protects all different kinds of animals.

We came across the word ‘conservation‘ and discovered that it means to protect the environment we live in, which is what Attenborough has spent his life doing.

“We should always put rubbish in the bin so it does not hurt animals” – Isla-Grey

“We need to be kind to animals and the world” – River

After learning all about Sir David Attenborough, we had a go at drawing some of the key aspects of his life. Like when he started narrating programmes for the BBC, when he received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth for his work and also some of the animals he has protected over the years.

Finally we had a go at writing a sentence about his life and contributions to finding out about animals and habitats.

Year 1 – RE

We have been looking at rules and why we need them.

We discussed that rules keep us safe and make sure that everyone is treated fairly.

The children shared their family rules.  Forrest told us that in his house they’re not allowed drinks in bed and Matilda told us that in her house no outdoor shoes are allowed.  We realised that all families don’t always have the same rules.

Myles told us that “we have golden rules at school” and we all agreed that these rules can also be used in family and a sports clubs.

We then listened to the story of Moses and how God gave him the 10 Commandments.

The commandments were the rules for all people to follow and live a good life by.

When we looked at the 10 commandments, the children could understand their importance in life today, even though they were from the Bible that was written a long, long time ago.

Year 1 then designed a poster of a rule which was most important to them. We decided that ‘be kind’ and ‘always try your best’, were the most important rules to follow.
