Year 1 – ICT

This term in ICT, our focus has been ‘Data and Information – grouping data’.

We have confidently become able to:-

  • Label objects.
  • Identify that objects can be counted.
  • Describe objects in different ways.
  • Count objects with the same properties.
  • Compare groups of objects.
  • Answer questions about groups of objects.

First, I asked the children to find me ‘a cylinder shaped object, that has stripes, one flat end, one pointy end and I can write and draw with it’ … they quickly realised that I meant a pencil and also why labels were important!

Next, we went on a ‘label hunt’ in our classroom, we found so many!

We then used our classroom resources to sort and label some objects.

We also looked at different ways to group objects.

Then we collectively used the class computer to search a variety of images, by categories like size, shape, use and colours.

This helped us to understand that data (images) have different labels so that computers are able to group them.

We also looked at internet safety this term, talking about how some things online could make us sad, worried or upset and how we can get help from a trusted adult if this ever happens.

Year 1 – PE

This term during PE Year 1 have continued focussing on being champion dancers.

We now know that champion dancers move with control, listen to the rhythm of the music, use their imagination and move using big, clear actions.

Our focus this time was superheroes, something the children were really excited about! 

We shared our knowledge of superheroes, how they look, move and the skills and powers they have.

We then thought carefully about how we could use our bodies, and expressions, to show this.

Over the weeks we have created movements, dance and poses that encompass this, using our bodies to skilfully move, balance, turn, spin and jump.

Again, at the end of each lesson, we performed examples of our dance to each other.  The children were all fabulous at watching and giving feedback to each other… amazing work!

Y1 Easter Egg Decorating fun!

Year 1 had a cracking time taking part in our egg decorating competition! Everyone brought in a hard-boiled egg and used paint, glitter, paper, and lots of imagination to turn them into amazing characters and creations.

We saw everything from minions and animals to sparkly princesses and silly monsters! The classroom was full of colour, laughter, and creativity.

Well done to everyone who took part—your eggs were egg-cellent!

Y1 Spring Walk to Pickering Park

As part of our science topic, we took a wonderful walk to the local park to observe the signs of spring and discover how nature has changed from winter to spring.

The moment we stepped outside, we noticed the fresh, crisp air and the warmth of the sun on our faces. The trees, which had been bare in winter, were now covered in tiny green buds, and some even had beautiful pink and white blossoms. We listened carefully and heard birds chirping happily in the trees—a sure sign that spring had arrived!

As we walked through the park, we spotted different types of flowers, such as bright yellow daffodils and delicate bluebells. We also looked at the grass, which was growing taller and greener than before. Some children even found small insects, like ladybirds and bees, buzzing around the flowers. We talked about how these insects help plants grow.

After our walk, we sat down to draw pictures of what we had seen. We had a little chat about what we enjoyed seeing and some children loved the flowers, while others were fascinated by the insects and birds.

 

Year 1 – Music

This term Year 1 have been learning the song  Round and Round.

Each week we have listened to and appraised a different style of music – Classical, Latin, House, Funk and Swing… discussing what we could hear, whether we liked it, how it made us feel, which instruments were used and how each song was put together.

They have also children are now confident at recognising the hook (the catchiest part) in the songs we listen to.

All the children showed great skill when listening to the music, using their prior knowledge to discuss whether the sounds were long, short, high or low.

They have also become more critical of the music, being able to say why they don’t like it, sometimes it’s too loud or too fast…but it’s been great to hear the children confidently sharing their views.

We have enjoyed playing the glockenspiel to play the keys C, D and F, this time we were even able to follow and use the sheet music.

We took turns at playing the glockenspiel, singing and doing both together too… some of us were even brave enough to sing solo.

Celebrating Comic Relief!

Comic Relief is always an exciting time, and for our Year 1 children, it’s a day filled with fun, laughter, and learning about the importance of kindness. This year, we celebrated with non-uniform, red noses and an unforgettable spoon race!

One of the highlights of the day was our special Red Nose and Spoon Race! Instead of the traditional egg-and-spoon game, we used red noses.

Laughter echoed across the playground as children carefully tiptoed, trying their hardest not to let their noses wobble off their spoons. Some dashed forward with determination, while others focused on slow and steady movements.

In the end, everyone was a winner because the race wasn’t about speed—it was about having fun, cheering on our friends, and embracing the Comic Relief spirit.

 

Year 1 – PE

Year 1 are continuing to become champion dancers.

The children were all excited that our unit this term is super heroes.

After listening to some inspiring music and moving to the rhythm, we then used big movements to strike a superhero pose, all demonstrating great control and balance … look how amazing they are!

Year 1 – RE

This week we have been sharing our thoughts on what we know about Easter 

”The Easter bunny.” Faith C.

“It’s a special time of year.” Thomas.

“Going out for meals with our family.” Avie.

”Going to church.” Harvey H.

”Jesus was nailed to a cross.” Matilda.

We then designed our own poster showing all the things that Easter is. 

 

Year 1 – PE

This term during PE Year 1 have been focussing on becoming champion dancers.

We learnt that champion dancers move with control, listen to the rhythm of the music, use their imagination and move using big, clear actions.

Our focus was growing, and each week we listened to music which inspired us to be flowers growing.

We started off using our bodies to be a tiny seed, slowly growing to the rhythm of the music into a beautiful flower – holding our pose as a balance then using a jump and turn with controlled movements.

Collectively, we made up a motif, which is a sequence of dance movements, to show a seed being planted and the rain and sun helping it to grow.

First, the children worked in pairs, carefully mirroring each other’s movements.

Then, working in groups, we took turns to perform to each other. Each group using moves we had created together, but also improvising with some new ones.

All the children thoroughly enjoyed this, taking great pride in their individual groups motif and showing respect for each others performance… amazing work, you are all champion dancers!

 

Year 1 – Music

Each week we have listened to and appraised a different style of music –  Blues, Baroque, Latin, Folk, Bhangra and Funk, discussing what we could hear, whether we liked it, how it made us feel, which instruments were used and how each song was put together. 

All the children showed great skill when listening to the music, discussing whether the sounds were long, short, high or low. They also showed amazing talent when moving to the beat and singing the song each week.

We have enjoyed playing the glockenspiel to play the keys C, D, E, F and G in the with the music and performing in groups to each other.
