Y1 Map Work

In Year 1 we have been learning about maps. We have been looking at world maps, maps of the UK, street maps and transport maps.

We used Google Earth and Digimaps to zoom in on our planet, the continent we live in (Europe), our country (England), our city (Hull) and then our school (Christopher Pickering Primary). We all loved zooming in and finding the streets that we live on too – some of us were able to spot our house!

We looked at school and what it looked like from an aerial view – some of us thought that from a birds eye view our school looks like a rabbits head and ears!

We found out that we would be labelling a map of the school and trying to find some of the physical and human features that we have here.

Although we see parts of our school everyday, we decided to go and have a look at some of the features. We found the forest area and knew that this was a physical feature and we found the car park and we knew that this was a human feature.

Once we had been all around school we came back into the classroom and wrote down some of the things that we saw and made a symbol to represent it.

Growing our own beanstalk!

In English this week we are learning how to write instructions on ‘how to plant a magic beanstalk’. Our first lesson focussed on looking at what we must include when writing instructions. We looked at a good example and noticed some interesting language. Each instruction started with an adverbial of time which told us when to do something e.g First, then and next. We then noticed some bossy language ‘get’, ‘put’ etc. Then we played a fun game…

The game was so fun! We pulled a bossy face when we heard an adverb of time and a bossy face for the bossy language. We then gave each other instructions. I have never seen so many bossy children!

We then followed specific instructions on how to plant a magic beanstalk. We have put them on the windowsill so they get plenty of light. We look forward to watching them grow over the weeks.

Spring is here!

Year one have noticed some differences in their surroundings from a few months ago. They told me that it “Isn’t as dark at home time or when we wake up”. We investigated that in Spring the sun rises earlier and sets later. We agreed that we much preferred this! Year 1 also talked about the weather getting slightly warmer than at Christmas time. We are looking forward to investigating Spring further next week.

Samuel Pepys’ Diary

In History, Year 2 have been learning about The Great Fire of London. In English today we started a new writing unit; Diaries. We have been learning about Samuel Pepys and reading some extracts from his diary entries. We found out lots of information from his diary entries. We are going to be writing our own diaries based on his work.

We have been learning about what plants need to grow. Today we started an ongoing investigation to test if our ideas were correct.

We started by discussing how a seed could start to grow.

We learnt new vocabulary to describe the growing process such as dormant and germinate.

Next, we split into groups and were told which condition our plant would or would not have before making a prediction about whether our seed would grow or not.

We planted our seeds and made sure we were conducting a fair test by only removing one of the conditions in each group and having one group with all conditions.

Finally we placed all our our planted seeds in a similar place to gain the same amount of sunlight and air, all except the ones we are testing for not having any light which had to go in the cupboard!

We will keep monitoring the seeds over the next few weeks to see what happens!

Year 2 Fractions

This morning Year 2 have started their new unit Fractions. We spent time looking at the whole  and parts of the whole. Then we looked at equal parts. We split objects, numbers and shapes into two equal parts.

All about Plants

Year 2 have been learning about plants this term. They have learned the parts of the plant, the things a plant need to survive and have learned about different plants that we can eat. Year 2 used their Computing skills this week to create an informative leaflet all about plants. In their leaflet’s the added text and pictures. They also changed the font size and colour.

The properties of 3D shapes

Year 2 have been learning about the properties of 3D shapes this week. They have been learning to count the number of faces, edges and vertices in 3D shapes. We used concrete models of 3D shapes to help us explore the different properties!

Waterproof experiments!

This week in Year 1 we have acted as scientists.

We had to find a material which could keep our teddy bears dry in the rain.

Zack did a fantastic job at home completing his science work.

He put his teddy in a bowl and covered the bowl with different materials before putting water on top to find out which one was the most waterproof and which would be best to make an umbrella for teddy with!

Zack found out that cling film was waterproof but it was too thin to make an umbrella with.

Wood is waterproof but that would be too heavy for an umbrella.

Paper wasn’t waterproof, so that was no good!

The material used in umbrella’s was the best material to keep the bear dry.

Zack certainly has a future as a scientist!

Great experiment Zack!

We are all unique!

What an end to a strange but wonderful half term. Year one finished by showing each other what makes them unique. We all watched with admiration at each others talents and we had such a mixture!

Hussain showed us some amazing karate moves. He was like a real life ninja!

Hollie did an outstanding performance singing and dancing. She said it makes her very happy.
