Planting

Today F1 have done their first little bit of planting.  The afternoon children carefully sprinkled radish seeds in a long line.  We then covered them back up so the birds don’t eat them before they can grow.  Let’s hope we have a nice crop very soon.

F1’s folded & printed butterflies

The children have been exploring how to make their butterfly wings the same on both sides.

Vinny thought it was, “Like a mirror.”

Rory said, “It closed then it opened again like a beautiful butterfly!”

Rory also thought, “It’s magic.”

But Pixie said, “It’s Science.”  How clever!

Science- Parts of the plant

This week in Year 1, we had a lovely time learning all about the different parts of a plant. The sun was shining, so we took our lesson outside to enjoy the beautiful weather!

We spent time observing real flowers and looking closely at their parts. We talked about the roots, which hold the plant in the ground, and the stem, which helps it stand tall and carry water. We spotted leaves that help the plant make food, colourful petals on the flowers to attract insects, and even tiny buds getting ready to bloom!

Then we created our own observational drawings, carefully labelling each part. It was a fantastic lesson and the children really impressed us with their careful drawings!

Y1 Spring Walk to Pickering Park

As part of our science topic, we took a wonderful walk to the local park to observe the signs of spring and discover how nature has changed from winter to spring.

The moment we stepped outside, we noticed the fresh, crisp air and the warmth of the sun on our faces. The trees, which had been bare in winter, were now covered in tiny green buds, and some even had beautiful pink and white blossoms. We listened carefully and heard birds chirping happily in the trees—a sure sign that spring had arrived!

As we walked through the park, we spotted different types of flowers, such as bright yellow daffodils and delicate bluebells. We also looked at the grass, which was growing taller and greener than before. Some children even found small insects, like ladybirds and bees, buzzing around the flowers. We talked about how these insects help plants grow.

After our walk, we sat down to draw pictures of what we had seen. We had a little chat about what we enjoyed seeing and some children loved the flowers, while others were fascinated by the insects and birds.

Tad!!!

F2 have loved reading the story ‘Tad’ by Benji Davies!!!

This story has inspired us to explore the lifecycle of a Frog, discussing how Tad starts his journey and where he ends up!

We have learnt lots of new key vocabulary, such as ‘frog spawn’ ‘tadpole’ ‘froglet’ and ‘frog’… and discussed how the life cycle continues and goes round and round.

Mrs Buss brought in some pretend frog spawn- chia seeds- we added water and mixed the gloopy mixture together to resemble real life frog spawn!

The children had a great time feeling and describing the spawn- describing it as “gooey’ “wet” “thick” and “gloopy”!

We had a great time mark making and drawing our own life cycles and could confidently talk about the process and change from frog spawn to frog!

F1’s snowstorm

As part of Science Week, F1 created a swirling whirling snowstorm. We watched a clip of how the wind blows the snow around then thought about how we could move our ‘snow’.  Ella knew that wind blows the trees and snow.  Pixie knew that our boards could make ‘wind’.  The results were fantastic!

“Oh the weather outside is… FREEZING!”

Winter is HERE! In Science this week we have been looking at the changing in the seasons and weather and boy can we tell that Winter is here!

The Children arrived at school on Tuesday to see that Jack Frost had been overnight and had turned our Foundation Stage garden into a wonderful delight of ice, sparkles and frozen frost! We have had such fun wrapping up warm and exploring the great outdoors to explore ice- what is it? How does it happen? what happens to it? So many great questions and discussions, explorations and observations to discover the answers!

The children have loved touching it, writing their names in it and trying very hard to break it! Great team building and skills as they tried a variety of tools to attempt to smash and break the ice! We have also enjoyed looking at nature around us and how the frost has affected some of the trees, leaves and plants! We had a lovely idea to use our warm hands to help warm up some of the frozen leaves!

And we also couldn’t help but have a sing song outside with our boom box…of course ‘Let it go’ by Elsa had to come out!

An autumn walk around Pickering Park!

Over this half term, in both science and geography, the children have been exploring the changes in the weather and the seasons. As the months have creeped from September to November, the children have noticed the weather begin to change and the trees around them begin to adapt, preparing for the colder months!

Year 1 had a fantastic afternoon at Pickering Park looking for signs of Autumn and exploring the great outdoors! We had a look around the park at all of the different animals and tree/leaf species we could see and identify! We talked about different types of trees and the size of different leaves. We then took our learning back to school by filling our outdoor area  with all of the goodies we had collected on the way!
