This week in Religious Education we compared two faiths in order to find out their similarities and differences. We chose Christianity and Sikhism.
We discussed different symbolic items from the different faiths and their importance.

The cross

The Khanda
The children found it really interesting that different religions believe in different things but they noticed that both Christians and Sikhs believe in a God.
The children were then introduced to the 5 K’s which are articles of clothing that Sikhs wear out of respect for their God.

Kanga– A wooden comb to keep their hair in place.

Kirpan– A tiny sword worn by Sikhs.

Kachera- Shorts worn as underwear.

Kara- A steel bangle that reminds Sikhs to behave well.
The final K is Kesh where Sikhs keep their hair uncut to show obedience to God.
We then explored the question ‘Why do religious people celebrate important life events?’ We looked at the Sikhs celebration of taking Amrit which is a baptism into their religion. Here are some of our answers:

As Theologists in Year 4, we have been exploring some images of a religious celebration and used our skills of inference and deduction to identify which religion this event is special to and what the celebration may have been about.
From the images, we identified that it was a celebration that is held in the Jewish community by how the gentlemen were dressed in the images and that a special meal was being shared in what appeared to be an outdoor living space.
- We shared our thoughts and opinions on what the images showed.
- We began making connections between the images.
- We identified links similarities within the pictures .
- We thought the images show people having fun and celebrating.
- We thought the images show people celebrating Harvest.
Miss Stewart then revealed that the images depicted the traditional Jewish Festival of Sukkot, We then watched a video-clip, whereupon Adam explained what the Festival of Sukkot is and the importance it holds to those who belong to the Jewish community. From this we were able to share the new learning that we had acquired from this lesson…
- Sukkot takes place in Autumn and lasts for 8 days.
- A Sukkah is built and special food is eaten.
- The men sleep in the Sukkah for 8 days.
- Food is shared with family .
- The Jewish community ask for God’s mercy and forgiveness.
Differences and similarities between the Christian celebration of Harvest and the Jewish celebration of Sukkot were discussed and we identified that both faiths celebrate a significant event in Autumn; each is a celebration where other people are remembered; both faith communities pray to God and there is a commonality whereby food is shared.

- A Christian Baptism.
- A Christian Wedding.
We started by discussing promises we might make to our friends and family. Next, we discussed the promises made by people of different faiths.
We watched videos and looked at photographs of Christian weddings and Baptisms to help us understand the promises that Christians make during these ceremonies.
Finally, we acted out a Baptism and a wedding. We had great fun and developed a fabulous understanding of the promises Christians make.
- Drawing Chritsian objects!
- The Cross on a necklace!
- The Khanda
- Christian Drawings!
- The Golden Temple.
We have been learning how people of different faiths show their religion through actions and objects. We looked at some of the objects, watched some videos of children from the Sikh Faith and the Christian Faith then produced drawings to showcase our understanding. Another great RE lesson with lots of discussion. Well done Year 2!
We started by thinking about what we had learned about Palm Sunday. We remembered lots of key information.
Next, we listened to the Easter story together and watched a short, animated film about Easter.
We learnt about the important days and what happened to Jesus on those days.
After that, we ordered the special days and match pictures to the correct statements for each day.
Finally, after some well deserved playtime, we had a quiz to see what we could remember about our learning. Lots of children got full marks and everyone had learned something new! Well done Year 2!
In F1, for Chinese New year we had a lovely celebration. We made a dragon, and created our own puppet show. We tried Chinese food, and learnt about the 12 years of the Chinese calendar investigating all of the different years. A lovely day for all.
Year 1 have had fun finding out all about Chinese New Year.
We found out that 2021 is the year of the ox. We also found out that the children in our class are either horses or goats!
Mrs Smith is a monkey and Mrs Heard is an ox.
We watched a dragon dance through the streets of China and were amazed at how many people were in the costume!
We talked about what foods might be eaten to celebrate Chinese New Year and it made us feel very hungry!
The children had the chance of tasting the foods some Chinese people eat during their celebrations.

The yummy food made our classroom smell delicious and we couldn’t wait to eat it.
The food was a bit tricky to get though, as Mrs Smith gave us chopsticks instead of a spoon or fork. The tasty spring rolls and crackers were much easier to pick up than the tiny rice.
It took lots of practise to be able to eat our feast.

After our yummy food we got a special cookie to enjoy. This cookie had a piece of paper in and told us what may happen in the future. We found out these are called ‘Fortune Cookies‘.

新年快乐
Happy New Year!
