Y4 Active Maths Session

This afternoon, Y4 took part in a range of fun, active maths actvities to help them learn their times tables. The activites were planned and delivered by our sports scholarship group who were challenged with inventing an activity which combined physical activity and times tables. A huge well done to our y56s who demonstrated excellent leadership and inventiveness.

Grace and Alisha’s activity used balance and co-ordnation

Evie and Lacie’s game required children to bounce a ball and recite a times table

Mud GLORIOUS MUD!

F2 had a glorious morning getting muddy- mixing, pouring, scooping, digging, painting, sweeping and making! In F2 we have been reading the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and loved making ‘dirty waffles’ for the pigs and ‘Wolf soup‘! We made some brilliant recipes, measuring and weighing our own collected ingredients!

Some of us enjoyed painting with mud! We mixed our own mud paint, making sure not to add too much water or mud getting the right consistency…we didn’t want it too watery! This brought up lots of topics for discussion about what the paint needed to feel and look like! If it was too watery what could we do to change the consistency? And if it was too solid… what could we do to change it? By the end of the session we had made the perfect mud paint!!!

Alongside mud painting some of us just enjoyed JUMPING UP AND DOWN IN MUDDY PUDDLES! These were moments of pure joy and happiness! After our P.E session yesterday on ‘jumping’ we were experts at it! Talking through the steps on how to jump- bend the knees and push!

Ball skills

This week in Year 2 we have been looking at ball skills using our feet.

We have looked at how we pass the all accurately and with control to get it to where we want it.  We know how to use the inside of our foot and the amount of force we need to use based on the distance we want the ball to travel.

We practised our skills with a partner before we played a game of ‘Mud Monsters‘.

We had to pass our ball to our partners and move around the hall whilst dribbling using control. If our ball touched a cone then we became stuck and couldn’t move.

It was a fun game to play and helped us think about our passing skills.

Y4 PE: Outdoor Adventure Activities: Problem Solving

Y4M undertook the Around the Clock Challenge  in our problem solving PE lesson this week. Each TEAM had a suit of cards arranged face down in a clock position which they had to race towards and turn over. The aim of the game is to place each card in numerical order beginning with the Ace and finishing with the King in the middle.

Teams raced against each other to complete the task before sharing the strategies they used in order to perfect each others game plan.  Some chose to turn one card each then move it to the correct position by swapping its place with the card that was face down in that position: whereas some children decided to turn each card over in turn then swap each card to its correct position.  It all became very competitive and drove us completely around the clock.

Great TEAMWORK Y4M!

Scholarship: Basketball and Beyond Week 2

This week, our sports scholarship continued to explore games which require hand-eye coordination. This week, they tried the dutch game Korfball. This is an interesting sport where mixed genders go head to head in a sport akin to netball. However, there is a big difference in that the scoring hoops are not on the edges of the playing area but in the middle, this means that payers can shoot from any angle.

The challenge for children this week came with Korfball’s defending rule. Once a player is being defended (or marked), the attacking player can no longer shoot for a goal. This means players much use quick sequences of passes to find scoring opportunities. Children really enjoyed this element and some pointed out that it would be interesting to try this with other sports. Great thinking children!

Having being defended, this player is looking for an unmarked player in a scoring position.

Despite not being played much in this country, Korfball is popular across much of Europe. It is unique in that men and woman are required to play on the same team.

Y4 PE: Outdoor Adventure Activities: Problem Solving

Y4E are enjoying our current Outdoor Adventure Activities in PE and recognising the benefits of working effectively as a team in order to solve problems.  The children have been sharing their opinions on the best way to solve the posed tasks and listening to each other to ensure that everyone feels values and included.

Here in the Bench Challenge, the children had to co-operate with each other to get themselves into height order whilst standing on a bench without touching the floor.

As you can see, the moves were tricky but the children demonstrated great TEAMWORK to accomplish the task!

In the Pen Challenge, the children had to work together as a team to place the marker pen down so that it stood up as far as possible from behind a line. Firstly the task was completed independently…

The children then had to try and better their independent measured reach by working as a Team!

We found that by reaching with support using a lever technique or wrist grip for support that their measured reach was improved.

Great TEAMWORK Y4E!

Year 5 Bikeability

Over the course of this week, Year 5 have been participating in completing their Bikeability cycling proficiency training. They have worked really hard to improve their knowledge about road safety and how to accurately ride a bike on the road (including safe signaling). All week the children have worked exceptionally well and many of them have completed their level 2 Bikeability course with a few select children being chosen for further level 3 training later in the year due to their excellence! Well done Year 5!

Scholarship: Basket Ball and Beyond

Over the next couple of weeks, our sports scholarship will be explore games linked to basket ball and really developing their hand-eye coordination and attacking and defending skills across some lesser-known sports.

This week, children played Tschouk ball – a fast-paced sport in which points can be scored at either end of the pitch by bouncing the ball off a special net and landing it in the playing zone. This game requires high levels of skill and quick thinking in oder to get to the upper hand.

Children also played handball. Requiring similar positioning and marking strategies as basketball and netball, children enjoyed this game but had to adapt their scoring and defences strategies.

Well done to everyone for your fantastic effort.

Finding ways to create scoring opportunities can be tricky in Tchoukball.

Sharp defence was the key to winning in handball!

Yesterday, the Women’s Rugby League World Cup began with England playing Brazil. As part of our sports scholarship programme, our girls went to go see the opening game at Headlingley Stadium. The match was an excellent event with a vibrant and exciting atmosphere. The game was fantastic, with England winning 72-4 in a fourteen try thriller. For the majority of our girls, it was their first every time watching live rugby and we all left he ground feeling inspired and buoyed by the growth of women’s sport and the platform it is now receiving.

Thanks for being excellent ambassadors girls, lets keep on supporting England this campaign!

Eager for the game to start!
