World Bee Day!

This morning in assembly, Mrs Buss talked to the whole school about ‘World Bee Day’ and the importance of Bee’s to the worlds ecosystem and how they help to pollinate our trees, flowers and even food! We need bee’s to help grow the vegetables and food we eat and they play a vital role in the worlds food chains!

Unfortunately most of the species of bees in this country are in decline and have now become labelled as endangered. We spoke about what we could do to help bees (not hurt them, offer sugary food for rest, create wildflower patches, build bee houses) and chatted about being kind to all living things.

The children in Foundation Stage have been busily creating a ‘wildflower space’ since last Summer and today we spotted lots of signs of bee activity there! This was lovely to see and the children enjoyed just sitting and watching the bees busily go about their day helping the plants!

We noticed, like Mrs Buss said, that the bees particularly took a liking to our blue and purple wildflowers as that’s their favourite colour! We can’t wait to build some bee houses over the next few weeks in Forest School and Nature Club… watch this space!

Bug House!

A lovely afternoon spent in the F2 garden planting tomato plants, sowing wildflowers seeds and building bug houses! We have kindly been donated lots of tomato plants and the children could not wait to plant these in our quiet sensory garden. We are helping each day by making sure the plants are watered and free of any pests or weeds! We have also created a ‘wildflower patch’ and are hoping to see this grow over the Summer months. This will hopefully encourage lots of bees and butterflies to our garden and we can’t wait to spot the different insects that might come! In preparation for the many insects we hope to spot we have all had a turn this week at building up our bug hotel! This was lots of fun nature hunting for different materials to pack in our bug house and we hope we have made it welcoming to our little insect friends!

Egg-cited! Chick Visitors!

The children in F2 have been very ‘egg-cited’ today to welcome our new visitors for the next few weeks…’The Chicks!’… or ‘Eggs’ at the moment! We are so lucky to have 24 eggs with us, keeping cozy and warm in their comfy incubators. We had a chat about what we think might happen over the next few weeks (20 days) and what changes we might start to see. We also talked about how the eggs will hopefully hatch and how they will begin to grow into one day…chickens! We discussed growth and how we also change just like the eggs and chickens. We also talked for a long time about looking after the eggs/chicks and how to look after animals and take good care of things. I think we are all going to be very good at helping out over the next few weeks and hopefully we will have lots of baby chicks to share with you soon! Stay posted for baby updates…

Spring Walk

This week F2 decided to go on a ‘Spring walk’ in search of all things SPRING! Unfortunately after a lovely warm morning the weather decided to take a some what ‘Winter’ turn in the afternoon… that said… there’s no such thing as bad weather?!! So coats on and hoods up we went on our way to see if we could track down some changes in the great outdoors and spot some signs that Spring was on its way! We had a tick list to give us a little inspiration and spotted some blossom on trees, buds beginning to open on bushes and even heard the sweet sound of birds tweeting amongst the wind and rain!!! We decided it would be a good idea to endeavour on a Spring walk 2 where we could further explore for bugs and other animals emerging for the warmer weather…stay posted…

This week in F2…

This week in F2, we have started our story,

Oliver’s Vegetables.

It’s all about a boy who doesn’t like vegetables, only chips!

In literacy we have been retelling the story using our signifiers, sequencing the story, recalling the days of the week, writing sentences about what we can see in the garden (I can see mud/a bush/a pond) and finding out all about the vegetables in the story.

In maths, first we recapped our learning of 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle). We can say how we know what shape it is by counting its sides and corners.  Then we learnt all about 3D shapes and their properties – cube, cuboid, cylinder and sphere.

In PE we practised for our Easter Bonnet Parade – we can’t wait for you to hear our amazing singing and see our fabulous dance moves!

On Thursday we spent time in our school library. We all enjoyed looking at all the fabulous books and sharing stories with our friends.

Friday was Red Nose Day. We all dressed in red and enjoyed lots of fun activities.  We also found out about why we raise money. how it is used to help people and why it is important that we support charities like these.

As always, we have spent lots of time learning and discovering outdoors…we have been looking for signs of Spring, weeding and watering the plants that have started to grow, gaining confidence when using the climbing wall and pole, singing our days of the week song, chalking shapes and much, much more!

Jack Frost!

The first thing our children noticed upon arriving at school this morning was the icy white frost that had covered our outdoor area! One child announced as he walked in “Jack Frost is here!”

This inspired us to get our coats on and go on a season walk, seeing if we could spot anymore signs of the arrival of Jack Frost! We got wrapped up and discussed the clothing we needed to wear at this time of year and headed out on our season walk! We loved exploring the frost with our senses, the touch of the cold, the smell of the fresh chilly air… some of us even enjoyed the taste of the cold ice!!! We noticed how the frost had left sparkly patterns on the floor, the leaves and on all our outdoor toys! We headed out around the school grounds and felt how hard the ground was and listened to the crunching of the grass under out feet!

This walk led to lots of discussions about what frost is and what happens to puddles and water outside when the frost comes! We discussed when we have seen frost before, lots of us have seen it on our windows or cars! And how we can get rid of it from cars! We talked about its glittery shiny appearance but how it also can be slippery and we must tread more carefully!

We loved exploring nature in the frost and finding leaves with beautifully sparkly patterns! Mrs Buss played a warm up leaf game with us… this was lots of fun as we got to find as many leaves as we could and warm them up with our hands watching the frost melt!

‘Hubble Bubble Boil and Trouble!’

It’s been potions galore this morning in F2!

We have been putting those fine motor skills into action, alongside our imaginations, to concoct and create the most magical of potions! Mixing, stirring, pouring, peeling, squeezing and sieving! We used some sweet smelling oranges, lavender, spices and pumpkins to bottle up our creations. We then followed this activity up by writing our ingredients list and describing what our potions could do! Turn you into a Unicorn, jump like a frog… and even disappear!

A lovely morning well spent in the great outdoors…

Nature Club!

This week in Nature Club the children loved searching for bugs in our mini-beast hunt! We found lots of different insects and were able to name them all! We looked at mini-beast books to learn interesting facts about each one! We found lots hiding under logs and bricks around school, hiding in the dark and damp. We had great fun making mini-beast homes and ticking off all the ones we found. We continued this learning in school by following the children’s interests and ideas by making a brilliant bug hotel! The children have loved adding to it in the Foundation Stage garden…

Nature Club!

Another beautiful week in Nature club! The children have loved going on ‘shopping hunts’ (as they like to call them!) recently and gathering and exploring what the outside has to offer us for free! We have loved the last few sessions taking part in ‘nature shopping’ and becoming more aware of the world outside around us and the signs of change and growth. We collected bits that caught our interest… through smell or colour or texture and loved discussing what we had found. We wanted to keep these precious finds so decided to laminate them and create ‘nature windows’. These came out beautiful and the children were very proud of their natural masterpieces!

Nature Club!

We had a fab time this week in our after school Nature Club! We went on a nature shopping trip, looking for different weeds and plants and signs of Spring/ Summer! We loved identifying plants and weeds we recognized around school and looking up the ones we were unsure of. We collected some weeds and leaves and decided in celebration of the weekends events to create crowns fit for King Charles! We looked absolutely fabulous in our ‘nature crowns’ and they smelt tremendous! Long live the King!!!
