In our new English unit, The Highway Man by Alfred Noyes, year 6 have been analysing the vocabulary within the poem and using their inference skills to understand the plot. They have also started to create their own story map of the narrative poem!
This afternoon was the final day Y4’s English unit based around ‘Leon and the Place Between’. For their last piece of writing, children learned a magic trick and wrote a set of instructions on how to perform their trick. Children then got a chance to practise their oracy by performing this to our Y2 children who absolutely loved seeing some magic!
Magic Millie showing her cup and ball trick!
Willow couldn’t believe it disappeared and reappeared again!
James demonstrating his vanishing coin trick.
Year 3 have loved our first visit of the year to the Library. We had the chance to read books quietly, share books with friends and even listen to a story that Mrs Smith read.
We sat around the library and spent time looking at all the lovely books we have. Mrs Smith even sat and read a book as well as telling us which ones were some of her favourites. Lots of us want to read Charlotte’s Web after we heard about some of the things which happen in the story.
Within our English unit, we are focusing on persuasive letters. Yesterday, we had a whole class debate regarding a school gym being built at Christopher Pickering. The class did amazingly with rebutting their arguments!
Usually on a Tuesday the children all have the opportunity to butter a slice of toast at snack time. They work hard, trying to spread the butter, developing their fine motor skills. Who would have thought that eating toast could help you learn to write!
F2 had a very special delivery today, a package addressed to us with a very special stamp!
We were so excited to receive this delivery and couldn’t wait to start discussing what we thought might be inside! The children were very excited and used their fabulous imaginations to think of some fabulous ideas! Rupert thought that it could be a “puppet” inside! Lincoln was convinced it was a tiny aeroplane! And a few of the girls, Delilah and Olivia hoped for a princess doll!
When we opened the package we were astonished to see none of the above but in actual fact… a GIANT pair of TEETH!
The children were flabbergasted to say the least! And had great fun checking that their own teeth had not fallen out! Instead we got straight onto the investigation of whose teeth these could possibly be?!
Phoebe thought they belonged to a monster, whilst Sullivan suggested they could be a dinosaurs that have fallen out! Grace said they could belong to a ghost as they were so pearly white, but Anniya definitely thought they belonged to a giant, as they were “so so big!” The children were determined to find who they belonged to and had great fun exploring the classroom to see if we could see a monster or a dinosaur or a giant with missing teeth! We used our binoculars (and made some of our own!!!) to go on a giant hunt and look for the person, or thing, with missing teeth!
We had no such luck in finding them today but tomorrow we are going to draw who they think they might belong to and create some ‘wanted’ and ‘missing’ posters! In the meantime the children have said they will take good care of the teeth, this includes brushing, and discuss how they look after their own teeth!
Stay posted…

Welcome to the Summer term!
This week in F2, we have started our story, Handa’s Surprise.
This is a story about a Kenyan girl called Handa who visits her friend, Akeyo, with a basket full of seven different fruits as gifts. Along the way, Handa thinks which fruit Akeyo will like the best, however, each time Handa thinks about a certain fruit an animal pops along and takes that fruit.
In literacy we told the story using our signifiers, picture sequenced it, and drew our story maps and added sentences to it too.
During our topic lesson, we thought about the fruits from the story and then about all the other fruits we know, including our favourites. Then we designed, drew and labeled our own fruit cocktail, which we’ll be making next week, we can’t wait!
Thank you for your 50p contribution each week, which enables us to carry out these fun learning activities.
In maths we have continued and extended our learning of sharing and grouping.
On Wednesday we all put on our smartest and most sparkly clothes and enjoy our very own disco!
We danced and sang along to all our favourite songs, and even enjoyed a bag of sweets and juice at the end… we were tied out from all our fabulous dance moves.
We have also been looking at and naming farm animals this week, in preparation for our school trip on Wednesday 12th June. Please remember to dress your child suitably for the weather and to bring a packed lunch.
This week in F2…
In literacy we innovated our story, The Enormous Turnip. We changed the turnip to a pumpkin and the animals in our story were a fox, a deer and a goat! Then we used our ‘Fred fingers’ to pinch the sounds so we could write some fabulous sentences.
In maths, we learnt all about sharing and grouping … we particularly enjoyed sharing out the cookies equally so that each plate had the same amount.
Unfortunately, on Wednesday, our park trip had to be cancelled due to the terrible rainy weather, but this didn’t stop us from having fun! We embraced the weather, put on our wetsuits and wellies, and went exploring our school forest area! We had a fabulous time searching for bugs and flowers, looking for fairies, squelching in the mud and catching raindrops, finishing off with a teddy bears picnic and some dancing…it was a wonderful day for the children…and staff too!
In topic we found out where our food comes from. We already knew that animals at farms provide us with eggs, milk and meat, but we also found out that fruit and vegetables are grown at farms too. We learnt that wheat is used to make bread.
We hope you all enjoy the half-term holidays, and we look forward to seeing you back at school on Monday 3rd June.
We are getting very good at innovating stories now and using our talk for writing skills and signifiers to retell stories and expand our story-telling language!
The last few weeks we have been learning the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’ and loved performing the story using our signifiers and props! Today we decided to change the story slightly and make up our own version! We changed the turnip into ‘The Enormous Pumpkin’ and changed the characters that helped to pull and pull! The children loved retelling our innovated story and thought of some more actions to represent our fox, goat and deer! We cant wait to use these actions to help us write our story tomorrow…

This week in F2, we have continued with our story, The Enormous Turnip. In literacy as well as retelling the story using our signifiers, we had a go at hot seating. This is when one of the children pretends to be a character from the story, and the other children ask them questions. Mia, Forrest, Thomas and Declan took turns at being the farmer and the children thought of some fabulous questions…”why wouldn’t the turnip come out?”, “how did it taste?” and “have you ever grown anything so big?”.
In maths, we continued rotating and manipulating shapes to make more patterns and pictures.
On Wednesday we had a special visitor, Neil from the local Buddhist Centre. He chatted to us about Buddha, explained their beliefs and brought special artifacts which they use. We loved the special bell, drum and sound bowl, which we used while we did some meditation.
In Jigsaw (our PSHE learning) we were thinking about what makes a good friend and how we can make someone who is lonely feel happier.
We have also looked at the history of farming and created some beautiful trees in art, inspired by Kandinsky’s concentric circles.
PE was focused on our football skills; controlling, stopping and dribbling the ball and we also enjoyed different types of jumping… it’s been a very busy week!
