story mapping!

In today’s English lesson, Year 5 started a new unit called The Lighthouse. To familiarise ourselves with the unit, we created a story map which consolidated our understanding. We spoke about the opening, build up, dilemma, resolution and ending.

Here are some of our story maps!

F1 writers

We’ve had a busy day in F1 being spectacular ‘writers’. The children have all created their own Hungry Caterpillar mini-book. We thought carefully about what happened in the story and wrote it down, we added illustrations and we practised reading our stories out loud together. Some children even took their books into Continuous Provision to keep working on them. Very impressive!

Year 5 have started a new unit in English – non-chronological reports. Today, the children learnt about structural and language features of non-chronological reports. Some structural features include:

  • Title
  • Sub-headings
  • Image and caption
  • Introduction
  • Paragraphs

Language features within a non-chronological report are:

  • Fronted adverbials
  • Relative clauses
  • Parenthesis to add extra information
  • Formal language
  • Factual language
  • Third person

The children then analysed a non-chronological report, highlighting these areas. We are now experts!

Gruffalo paintings

F1 children listened to the description of the Gruffalo and then painted pictures of him.  They had to remember his ‘terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws’.  They tried to paint his ‘knobbly knees, and turned out toes, and a poisonous wart on the end of his nose’.  Can you spot his that ‘his eyes are orange, his tongue is black’ and that ‘he has purple prickles all over his back’?  What super artists.

F1 enjoy shadows

We have joined in Science Week by exploring shadows.  Mrs Kenington made some fabulous puppets, from our Gruffalo story, which we have enjoyed exploring, especially during Breakfast Club.  The children really enjoyed listening to and joining in with the story.

Gruffalo food tasting!

F1 had a chat about what foods they could remember from our Gruffalo story…

“Roasted fox”, said Forrest.  So we tried some!

Keigha wasn’t impressed with the idea of roasted fox, “It’s disgusting, I’m not trying that!”  Ivan thought differently though, “I like it!”

Warran remembered that there was also scrambled snake in the story.  But what would it be like?  Myles said, “I think scrambled snake would be green because the snake is green.”  However, it wasn’t actually green!

“It’s so good!” said Ivy N with surprise.  “It tastes like pasta,” said Violet.

Isabella remembered about the owl ice cream too.  Keigha thought, “Owl ice cream would be sweet.  It would be grey.”

Lottie and Luna both said, “It’s good.”  Reuben thought, “It’s yummy!”  Alex said, “It’s cold.”

Some of the children tried everything.  Some were pleasantly surprised!

Tyler said, “Fox?  Carrots!”

He was right!  The teachers confessed that the roast fox was actually roast carrots, the scrambled snake was pasta and the owl ice cream was frozen yogurt.

“It wasn’t a good pretend!  I thought it was roasted fox!” exclaimed Violet.

“You tricked us!” realised Phoebe.

It has been great fun though and we were really proud of everyone for trying new food.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt!

We’re going on a bear hunt! We’re going to catch a big one! What a beautiful day!

We’re not scared, demonstrating our good looking and listening skills whilst watching our new story.

We absolutely love retelling all our stories through Tales Toolkit!

Mark making with paw prints, we completed our journey from start to finish using visuals to represent characters, a setting, a problem and a solution.

We creeped outdoors in search of bears using our own homemade binoculars.

Uh-Uh! We found grass. Long wavy grass.

Uh-Uh! We came across a river. A deep, cold river.

Uh-uh! We got stuck in the mud. Thick, oozy mud.

We made our own natural paintbrushes using sticks and grass creating our artwork using real mud.

Uh-uh! We stumbled across a forest. A big, dark forest.

Uh-uh! We had to go through a snowstorm. A swirling whirling snowstorm.

We arrived safely to school with our families through a real swirling, whirling snowstorm.

We had so much fun playing in real snow!

We made our own bears using a fork printing technique.

We’re still not scared!!!!!

After completing the features on our bears… we felt very scared!

We ran all the way back home through the swirling whirling snowstorm, the deep dark forest, the thick oozy mud, the deep cold river, the long wavy grass, stumbled up the stairs and hid under the covers.

We demonstrated good teamwork skills creating the bedspread using a variety of materials to simulate the one in our story.

Can you spot us hiding under the covers?

We’re never, ever, ever going on a bear hunt again!!!!!
