The Zoo Lab Rainforest Experience

Deep in the Y3/4 rainforest, the pupils were treated to a visit from the very experienced and knowledgable Zoo Lab! We had a wonderful day, learning about some of the animals that can be found in the different layers of the rainforest.

We met tallulah the five year old  tarantula that can fire out her hairs as a weapon and method of self defence ( needless to say we didn’t handle her) …

Millie the millipede who helps create healthy soil by eating the rotting leaves and fruits from the forest floor….

The geko that can shed it’s tail if captured by a predator….

Prince the Python that flexes his jaws and swallows his prey whole (gulp!)…

Green fingered??

Miss Jeffrey’s class clearly have the ‘green – fingered’ touch as their potato plants are coming along very nicely! We can not say the same for Mrs Hebden’s however!! Perhaps we should seek advice from the gardeners amongst our families as to how we might improve our chances of winning the potato growing competition! All advice welcome!!!

Year 4 Violin Lessons

During the introductory week, we met the teachers that will be teaching us the Violin for ten weeks, Mr Smalley and Mrs England. We learned a little about the instrument and enjoyed listening to a demonstration from these very skilful players.

We loved our first lesson, as we learned how to handle the instrument and found out more about the violin. We learned how to strum and pluck and enjoyed performing in unison during our very first lesson! We felt so proud of ourselves!

The Muddy Boots Club

Each week, the Muddy Boots club have been tending to our plots. You may have seen them if you use the Anlaby Park Road South entrance. The strawberries are coming along nicely and we hope for another successful yield this year. The peas are beginning to spiral up their canes and the radishes are producing a healthy green leaf.

Muddy Boots Gardeners

The muddy boots club were out in force on Thursday lunch.

This week we weeded the strawberry plants. We are hoping to get a great crop this summer!

Our club is expanding and we have new members from the Hub and Ganton with the greatly appreciated  time and expertise from Miss Whitton and Mrs Whitton.

Huge thanks to Miss Whitton and Tim who have been working wonders in the polytunnel and its now a gardeners haven!

Yorkshire Water Workshops

We are produly working with Yorkshire Water (YW) and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) on a project called Soak It Up.

Did you know that outside of London, Hull is the city most at risk of flooding?

We want to educate this younger generation about ways in which we, in Hull, can help to Soak Up the excess water and to prevent flooding.

A great way of doing this is to create Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).

YW and YWTcame into school and ran  workshops with Y3/4 to help us learn about SuDS, and the water cycle.

We gathered for an introductory assembly, where we loved taking on the role of grown ups to act out a flooding scenario.

We used our science skills to look at the extended water cycle.

We worked in our classrooms with maragret to investigate the process of evaportation and condensation.

We carried out an investigation with Jennifer to see which surface materials slowed the rate of surface run off and this gave us some ideas for planing.

We planned the items thatwe would take with us in a flood energency and were able to say why.

Jennifer is working on ideas for SUDs that will be installed on our site at the end of May. She needed our help to decide which SUDs we would like to install and where would like to install them.

We planned our SUDS on an enlarged map of the school, margaret and jennifer then poured water over our plan to immitate rainfall and we calcualted how much water our designs absorbed.

InMay a team of volunteers are coming in with YW to instal the SUDS that wehave chosen. We will keep you posted on the progress.

Have you got any SUDS at home? Tweet us and tag in @Yorkshirewater @Yorkswildlife #Soak it up

Ahead of it’s official launch, these lovely pupils were keen to help us prepare the soil in our planters. We are looking forward to a green fingered year in which we can earn out Bronze Food For Life award from the soil association.
