This week in Year 5, we have been exploring explanation texts. We wrote a guide on how to be a good friend, focusing closely on the importance of being kind, listening and offering support, as well as being honest and trustworthy. This work has linked closely with Wonder, the book we are currently reading, as we have been discussing the importance of kindness, empathy and treating others with respect.

Science Week

This week has been Science Week, and in year 5 we have taken part in the BBC Live Lesson. During this session, the children learned about space and light, which linked to our Autumn term science topic on Space, where we explored the sun, moon, orbiting, and the other planets in our solar system.

In our science lessons this week, we continued learning about the human life cycle, focusing on the final stage: old age. The children discussed how our bodies change as we grow older and what we can do to support a healthy lifestyle throughout our lives. They then created informative posters highlighting ways to stay healthy to promote a better quality of life in old age.

Year 5 Viking WOW Day

Year 5 had an incredible Viking WOW Day! We began by exploring the history of Viking shields, learning about their designs, patterns, and the meanings behind the colours they used. Using this knowledge, we created our very own shields.

We also looked at Viking runes. After discovering how the runic alphabet worked, we had a go at writing our names and even created secret messages for our friends to decode. It was amazing to see how Vikings communicated in such a unique way.

To finish off our busy day, we relaxed with some Viking word searches and even learned how to draw our very own Vikings.

Persuasive letters

In English this week, Year 5 have been learning how to write effective persuasive letters. Working in pairs, the children wrote letters to Mrs Marson, trying their very best to convince her that our class should be allowed to have a class pet.

Children In Need Challenge 25

Today we had a fantastic afternoon taking part in our Pudsey 25 Challenge for Children in Need. The children showed amazing energy and enthusiasm during our 25-minute marathon danceathon, and they were very proud of their efforts!

As part of the day, the children also enjoyed designing their own Pudsey T-shirts and taking part in some bright and cheerful Pudsey colouring activities. This morning in assembly, we spent time learning about why we raise money for Children in Need and the important charities and people it supports.

To round off our busy day, everyone enjoyed a well-deserved bun after completing their challenge.

Say No To Hate – Year 5

Today our classes had a special visit from PC Carl Osler from Humberside Police to talk about saying NO to hate. He spoke to us about why it’s important to say NO to hate and treat everyone fairly. The children really enjoyed sharing their ideas and learning how we can all help make our school a safe and welcoming place.
