Art & Design Curriculum Enhancements

At Christopher Pickering, we believe that enhancing our subjects is essential to further children’s understanding and passion for particular disciplines. We organise trips, host extra curricular clubs and often invite visitors in the help embed the children’s understanding and to bring learning to life.

Throughout the year we organise themed days/weeks to further develop the opportunities we give our pupils and regularly invite parents in to share and celebrate the achievements of the school.

Year 1 Land Art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy

In the summer term, Y1 go on a trip to Bridlington with an art and geography focus. When the children go onto the beach, they have the opportunity to source and collect a range of natural materials that they find on the beach such as stones, shells and seaweed. Working in groups children then create their own piece of land art, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy and using their own imagination. Some of the children even improvise with sandcastles!

Year 4 Roman architectureĀ inspired sketching at Queen Victoria Square

In the spring term, whilst studying the Roman impact upon Britain, children in Y4 have the opportunity to look at the beautiful architecture in the city centre and sit and sketch. In Queen Victoria Square, buildings such as Ferens Art Gallery, Hull City Hall and The Maritime Museum are all fantastic examples of Roman inspired architecture from the end of the Georgian period. They all encompass some of the iconic designs developed by the Romans and still used to this day. Children complete a variety of sketches including overall drawings of the whole building or more detailed studies of specific ‘Roman Inspired’ parts of the building such as pillars, arches, vaults and domes.

Christopher Pickering Art Gallery

During the autumn term 2023, we held an art gallery for children and parents. The children were given a theme based on Hull or family and had to paint/draw/sketch or collage their pictures using an artist as inspiration. The children worked very hard and produced some amazing pieces of work. The work was framed and displayed and looked very professional. All children had the opportunity to look around the gallery and to appraise all of the work – parents came into school in the afternoon and were able to purchase their children’s creations.

Workshops with Charlotte EldredĀ

Over the course of the academic year, children across the school have been fortunate to work with local artist, Charlotte Eldred in a variety of doodle workshops. Charlotte is an artist based in Hornsea known for her fabulous illustrations and doodles which can be found on windows, on greetings cards and decorative items across the local area.

In Year 2 to coincide with their self-portrait work inspired by Julian Opie, children worked on a range of doodles based around the human face. They learned to create an outline to achieve the basic facial structures then ‘got creative’ with doodles to make each face personalised.

In Year 6, when children were studying ‘Banksy – Artist or Vandal?’, children first practiced creating stencils by forming outlines then filling in with doodles of various animals and objects. Then, inspired by Girl with Balloon, children created their own doodles based on this.

In Years 3 and 4, to celebrate the Kings Coronation, children worked with Charlotte on doodles based around the Coronation invitation. The children across the phase produced some amazing doodles and are now proudly displayed in school!

Charlotte has also been into school to doodle on our windows in our library and around our school building to add some colour and to make our communal areas really stand out!
