Today our Year 4 Historians made a visit to the Hands on History museum to learn more about the Amazing Ancient Egyptian Civilisation.
We began with a tour of the Egyptian Quarter. We were able to look at a range of artefacts that Historians have used to conclude what life in Egypt must have been like and what was important to the Egyptian people.
Many artefacts dated back to the 1920’s when the world was gripped with interest in Howard Carter’s Dig! Interestingly, these artefacts date back to the time of when Lil lived in our Guided Reading Text, The Secrets of the Sun King by Emma Carrol.
Here we learned that some artefacts on display were replicas of the originals and others were original artefacts that were donated to the museum…. such as the Mummified Body!
We silently entered the dimly lit room and peeped through the thick glass casing to wonder who the person was that now lay mummified before us in a Museum in Hull! It was very exciting!
After the tour, we worked in teams to handle, examine and discuss a range of artefacts. We were able to make informed predictions as to what that artefact told us about life over 3000 years ago.
Finally we looked at the Rosetta Stone and learned how this significant discovery helped us to decode the magnificent Hieroglyphics that the Egyptians cleverly used to communicate.
