Pencil or Charcoal?

During our second lesson, taking lead from Rousseau’ observations of plants in the Botanical Garden in Paris, we sketched leaves of a variety of plants, taking note of their shape, lines, shading, patterns and colour. We made careful observational sketches in pencil and then compared that to the effects achieved when sketching with charcoal.
