PE Curriculum Enhancements

Inter-school Competitions

A large part of our PE and Sports provision is inter-school competitions. As members of Hull Active Schools, we attend lots of different sports competitions every year including: football, tag rugby, badminton, cross country, indoor athletics, quad kids athletics, swimming, dodgeball, Tri-Golf, netball, cricket, rounders and more. Our aim is for all children to have represented the school in a sports competition by the end of year 6. We also strive to ensure our competition schedule is inclusive by attending inclusion sport festivals like Boccia and New Age Kurling and also entering many ‘B Team’ competitions.

Sports Scholarship Programme

Our sports scholarship programme offers children in Y5/6 an extra 1.5 hours of PE every week with different sports coaches. Within the programme, children deepen their understanding of sports they’re familiar with, but also get to experience a new breadth of sports beyond our normal PE curriculum. They also participate in a variety of trips, experiences and workshops. Children can apply for a sports scholarship at the beginning of year 5 and/or 6.

Yoga and Mindfulness

Every year, each class spends 4-6 weeks working with our Yoga and Mindfulness coach Liesel Cobby. From FS2 to Y6, children learn differing yoga positions and routines and how this ancient practice is not only good for the body but mind as well. Children also get to participate in guided meditation and are helped to develop self-calming and mediative practices of their own.

Badminton

During year 4, local badminton coach Paul Pratt delivers 6 weeks of badminton. Being quite a technical sport, children start with the very basics and build their skills and are able to serve and hold a rally by the end of the unit. In years 5 and 6 children have the opportunity to attend our after school badminton club. In addition to this, Paul also signposts children to Hull Badminton Club who train at Sirius Academy West. Many children from Y4-6 are currently in attendance.

Aspire Gymnastics

In the summer term, children in Y6 round off their gymnastics learning at primary school with a visit to Aspire Gymnastics. This is an Olympic-standard gymnastic facilities where children spend the day working with specialist coaches across a range of apparatus which they cannot try in a school setting like: sprung floors, trampoline tracks, full sized beam, uneven bars. Check out the video of out first visit here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Nd-yCs_IL0&t=2s

Annual Sports Day

Every year our annual sports day is held at Costello Athletics Stadium. We choose this location as it allows children to experience what it is like to perform at a ‘real’ sporting event and represent their house on the big stage! Children from Y1-6 attend and our four houses compete against each other in a range of track and field activities. For a number of events, we have school records which children can attempt to break each year. The event is the highlight of our sporting calendar and one of our parent’s favourites.

Intra-House Competitions

As well as a comprehensive inter-school competitions, children compete in several intra-house competitions throughout the year. Usually at the end of a PE unit but some also match up with annual sporting events and local school competitions.

Experience Days

Once a year, we try to provide all children with a new sporting experience. Previously we have hired a climbing wall for two day which allowed all children from F2-Y6 the change to try the new Olympic sport (at the time) of rock climbing. Other years children have tried fencing and salsa dancing! 2022 sees the return of the climbing wall as well as two days of golf!

Bikeability, Pedestrian Skills and Active Travel

In Y5, children have the chance to complete bikeability levels 1 and 2. External coaches deliver these sessions over the course of a week and even provide bikes and helmets for those without. Children who do not pass in Y5 will then have the chance for further sessions the following year in Y6. As well as ensuring children are safe on the roads on bicycles, bikeability if fantastic for promoting active travel and can be a great starting point for those who struggle to be physically active.

Pre-pedal Sessions

Our early years PE curriculum is enhanced by a weekly pre-pedal sessions. Coaches from First Steps will come into school one afternoon a week for a full term and deliver sessions aimed at getting children moving on a balance bike. For some children, this is their first experience on two wheels and coaches start with the very basics and build children’s confidence through fun games and activities. It is alway incredibly popular with children!

Year 6 Residential

In year 6, children have the opportunity to go on a three day residential trip. At High Adventure Education Centre will get the chance to try a wide range of adventurous activities. Each year, the schedule changes slightly but activities include: archers, rock climbing, abseiling, high ropes. crate stacking, gladiator climb, zip line, orienteering, caving, local hikes and rock weasling.
